Palmer affirms the wisdom of Martin Buber and Dietrich Bonhoeffer in this brief presentation distinguishing true from false community. He insists that the former cannot be attained directly but must come from the struggle of egos in search of healing in the midst of suffering and disintegration; while, in contrast, the latter is idolatrous.

If you wonder how the concept of community continues to evolve in these times, read this short concise pamphlet. This distinguished educator identifies how our culture of individualism can come around to embrace the richness of community even though we have ditched much of the historic grounding.

Not much to say, except I did enjoy it and the main character, Ed. Characters believable, even the “bad” guy.

Good

Well written with twists and turns that rivet your attention. Characters are interesting and well defined with very relatable virtues and vices.

I liked it.

Arriving at a new posting in Canterbury, DI Edina ‘Ed’ Ogborne is thrust straight into the middle of a big case - a young woman has gone missing. It’s quickly apparent that the case bears similarities to a similar one from four years ago, and Ed must try to integrate with a new team which resent her arrival and try to solve the case before a tragedy occurs. The villain in The Taken Girls is an interesting character, one who experiences no sexual desire for his victims, just an obsession with having children. The young women taken are kept in captivity, never see their captor’s face, but are well treated for several weeks until their release. Soon after, they discover they are pregnant, which is a unique twist in this sort of crime novel I hadn’t heard of before. Because of the nature of the crime, I had my suspicions from early on about who the perpetrator was which were proved correct, though the author did plant lots of red herrings to try and keep the reader guessing until the very last minute. As a protagonist, Ed is fascinating but it’s hard to feel empathy for her, mainly because for a supposedly smart woman she shows absolutely deplorable judgement when it comes to her personal life and particularly the men in it. Forced out of the Met because of an affair with a married man, which I have to admit made me dislike her immediately (I despise adultery) she promptly gets involved with another sleazebag without even making an effort to discover if he’s married or not. I wanted to shake some sense into her, I’m afraid. There were some pretty toxic tropes surrounding the villain as well, with him blaming his mother and sister for everything he’d become. Fortunately he wasn’t the only character in the book behaving badly, with a network of wealthy and influential men proving to be doing some pretty terribly things too; this was the part that most disappointed me, that Ed didn’t get the chance to roll up this old boys’ network as a side benefit of her investigations. There’s a lot of repetition and since the book is set in 2012, it seems a little ‘dated’ in regards to technology usage, particularly CCTV. I’m a little surprised the editorial team didn’t get the author to update it as well as tighten up the prose and rewrite Ed as somewhat more relatable. All in all, an interesting story let down by poor characterization and a lack of editing. Three stars.Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for review through NetGallley.

A great thrilling read. Full of twists and turns. Ed Ogborne might have had no choice about her transfer away from the Met. She got involved with a married with another officer and they all stood by him, she should have known better. She knows that things aren't going to be easy for her in Canterbury as their DI is moving on as she was given his position. Can she make a good impression when she meets the new team? Ed just wants to do a good job yes she is very ambitious but she has awful taste in men. The team isn't welcoming at all they that their boss has been treated badly. She will need to win them over. They have a new case of a missing girl that just disappeared into thin air. Can they find her before it is too late?Ed is now in charge and she has to make sure that she makes a good impression and that her team can trust her. She worries that they might not find all the answers that they need. They are working on a suspect list when the girl is found but they are no closer to find the kidnapper. The more Ed digs she finds that records have gone missing and not much was done to find the suspect all those years ago. This isn't his first victims. Unfortunately Ed has gotten herself in an awkward position with another man again and she will need to go against she believes in to save her career but will this have any bearing on the case? Another young girl is taken and they now know that they are taken and that they are only returned once they are pregnant. Can Ed & her team find her before her life is changed forever?A good interesting read. I hope that Ed really learns her lesson as she won't have a long career with the Met if she carries on down this path. I was lucky enough to receive a copy via Netgalley & the publishing house in exchange for my honest review.

The Taken Girls is a novel with a truly odd villain. The story begins in 2010 when a teenage girl is abducted. Despite the best efforts of the police, the girl remains missing for over 30 days. Suddenly, without warning, the girl is returned, seemingly unharmed. For 10 years, the abductor remained silent and no more girls go missing. Then in present day, the Canterbury police are given a fresh challenge when a new teenage girl suddenly goes missing. The case falls to Edina Ogbourne. She has just relocated to Canterbury to take over as Detective Inspector. She must do her best to run her unit despite being the odd man out.Despite the best efforts of Edina and her team, leads in the case of the missing teenager remain elusive. After about 2 weeks missing, the teenager is returned seemingly unharmed, and within days, another girl goes missing. It soon becomes apparent that the returned girls have come back fundamentally changed. The first taken teenager shows up at the police station pregnant. An exam reveals that the teenager is still a virgin. This raises a whole new set of questions about what kind of monster they are searching for. The race is now on to rescue the next missing teen before the abductor has a chance to inseminate her as well. The story is engaging and fast paced. This is a fresh version of a disturbed mind that I haven’t seen before. We see all sides of the story as we are privy to the inner thoughts of the lead detective, the teenage girl who is missing, and the abductor. A strong, fun read.

As a Linux administrator, I ordered this book hoping to find out how hackers typically gain access to systems and neat little tricks for locking down my system, as well as detecting and dealing with intruders. While Practical Unix & Internet Security did cover these topics, it covered little I didn't already know.Significant time is spent explaining how unix-based systems work. The book covers things such as file systems, partition structure, file ownership/permissions, users and groups, inodes, ssh, backups, etc. Each command, utility, procedure or feature is detailed over several pages followed by an explanation of what you should be doing with said topic. There are also a few real-world examples here and there; stories most of us have heard before, like the admin who had . in his path.Unlike many computer books, this one is well written and an easy read, and it's certainly a lot more friendly than some unix geek's advice which consists of RTFM.I think this book would be great for someone who has a very basic understanding of unix-based systems but has never administrated one before, but for those of us who've already had some experience running unix there's probably not anything new here for you.

Good review book of things I have known for a long time. But, it should be geared more toward large enterprise security tools like BoKS, PowerBroker, TripWire, etc.

Gospel by now

I should have paid more attention when I bought this book in a series of security books and I regret this buy. Its "best seller" position is IMO unjustified because the networking/internet sections (10 total lines on SSL!, mentions of Netscape 2.0b2, nothing on ICMPs attacks, 3 lines about spoofing...) are completly outdated and/or pretty useless.

Excellent and comprehensive coverage of the topic. Easy to understand.

Good indexStraightforward languagePractical examplesHighly recommendedRequired reading for Linux Sys AdminsGreat reference for novices or experts

I'm pretty sure this book has been "de facto" for all security professionals, It is contains all basics stuff related unix wold.

This book may be very useful for people who have a strong working knowledge of Unix or Linux. I would recommend learning one of these operating systems before purchasing the book because it's practically unintelligible without that base of knowledge.I bought it for a class and stopped reading it after the third week of school because I was getting nothing out of it. One can learn security concepts without learning Unix.I recommend this book only if you have a good background in Unix or Linux. Otherwise, it will likely end up a paperweight.

Charnock's Discourses Upon the Existence and Attributes of God is a classic among classics. It is a massive work that is comprised of two volumes. This particular edition contains both volumes in one book, a total of nearly 800 pages.Charnock deals with the attributes of God in what he calls "Discourses." These are each lengthy treatments of a fairly narrow (if that could be said of God) attribute of the God of the Bible. For example, Charnock devotes 55 pages (small print, too) to a discussion of the immutability (unchangeable nature) of God, and he examines the knowledge of God for 63 pages. Equally thorough sections cover many other attributes such the eternity of God, the power of God, and the dominion of God--to list just a few.Charnock's discourses are stunning, to say the least. He held an extremely high view of God that seems to be lost in much of the church today. His writing will challenge your thinking, making you consider things you probably haven't thought of before. He delves deeply into each characteristic, organizing his comments with an outline format and providing much Scripture to back up his positions. On the down side, the language is dated, and this makes reading a bit more difficult. Additionally, the book reviewed here is a reproduction (a scan) of an original published in 1849 by Henry G. Bohn, this from the library of the University of California. Because it is a scan, the typeface is an old one, the text is fairly small, and the quality is acceptable but not great. In any case, this is a fantastic work and a sweeping survey of our magnificent God.

Speechless, don't know where to begin. Stephen Charnock's writings have won my heart over ANY other author, hands down. I would purchase any book he has ever written. His writings stir up emotions and touch the soul in a way no other author can. Thought I would highlight the "important" lines, but ended up highlighting nearly half a page on every page in the whole book. It is impossible to leave out anything because everything he says is valuable. No wasted words here.

Stephen Charnock's life works concerning the nature of God from the Bible. Each page is so deep that it takes me 1/2 hour per page to digest what he has written. I can open the book up to any page and learn something new from this thoughtful theologian.

I haven't found a good kindle version of this book. I tried 3 versions. Every version has a couple of typos about every page. I ended up by buying the hard copy version. Charnock is repetitive to a fault. He's makes his point so thoroughly that this reader wants to scream. However, they are jewels in the rough. He can be pithy and poignant. The different versions have different chapters. The "God is Spirit" chapter (I don't think is in my hard copy) is especially verbose, but it is very good in parts. On the actual attributes starting with God's eternality, he seems to be more on point, but he is verbose. Once again, he is worth reading slowly. I found myself thinking this is really obvious, but in the next sentence he brought out a point of view I never thought of before. He is a deep thinker.

I think the first chapter to read should be "Discourse XI: On The Holiness Of God" (page 108, Vol. 2). Profound insights that can be inspirational and, sometimes, unsettling.

This book is one of my favorites. I have no words to express how much I enjoy reading this book. I you like reading and meditating on the Bible you will enjoy it also.

This is a life changing text if you are a Bible Person. Everyone I know that has read this has had their lives changed; including myself!

Come of Age: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Trouble, by Stephen Jenkinson

Review

“This isn’t a book, it’s an agitation. A glorious rumination that gets inside words themselves and tugs adroitly at their root system, part of a wider exfoliation that holds subtle ideas close, lest they disappear in all this mud, smoke, and darkness. This isn’t a book, it’s a kind of divining, the rare breed that can leave the scriber harrowed and the reader blessed. This isn’t a book, it’s a murmuration, erudite wonderings that have wingspan and wit, turning suddenly and with elegance over the trembling acreage of our lives.” —Dr. Martin Shaw, author of Scatterlings: Getting Claimed in the Age of Amnesia“Stephen Jenkinson has a way of reaching right into the heart of Western culture’s dis-ease, all the while deftly rupturing and turning the English language inside out in order to do so. He traces the roots of the word elder to ‘coming to fullness’ or ‘fully realized,’ to one who may take their place among us only when the ebbing and failure of growth is admitted.” —Ruth Jones, founder of Holy Hiatus, Wales, UK   “Jenkinson does not blame, indict, nor traffic in solution, rather he elders—with an immense love of life and the world—the long redemptive road where young and old might yet recognize each other and decide to take a little walk. Come of Age has so much respect for your willingness to pick it up that it will ask more of you than you ever thought possible; an unlikely and precious gift that may just change everything.” —Sean Aiken, author of The One-Week Job Project   “Be you young, middle-aged, or in your time of greying, Stephen Jenkinson’s scrying into the daunting crater of what has happened to us historically, mythically, spiritually to forge today’s dominant culture with its signature malignant appetite for progress and novelty, is a much-needed missive from an uncommonly rare voice in the clamouring marketplace of protest, self-help, and innovative solutions. Come of Age attests to the tragic dearth of deep abiding regard for elderhood once traditionally recognized and prized as a sign of health and sanity in cultures that knew something of the artful ways of the world, of the Gods and of human making, a regard without which a culture goes bankrupt and becomes a menace to life and to itself. With a lucidity that is at once beautifully poetic and arresting, and with an astounding deftness tracing the signs available to us in both their unmistakable presences and absences, Jenkinson invites us to gather around the crackling fire of wonder and heartbreak where, without recourse to clever fixes, we might properly give ourselves to being awed, bewildered, and sorrowed, perhaps the preferred ground of real humility and courage. For the sake of the world, for the sake of the young, for the sake of elderhood, let this prescient book wreck you.”  —Rachelle Lamb, Nonviolent Communications (NVC) Trainer   “This book transcends ideology and platitudes and takes you deep into ancestral roots and wisdom. Jenkinson is a treasure—a raspy, nonconforming sage who has the rare ability to sneak up behind you with masterful storytelling that compels you to be troubled enough and to wonder (barely in the nick of time) if you are ready to begin to live your life as if you matter. This book brings a deeply learned, insightful, and rare perspective on navigating these troubled modern times.” —Dana Bass Solomon, Graduated CEO, Hollyhock Centre, British Columbia, Canada   “If you have ever been fortunate enough to be standing by a frozen river on the days when the slightly warming temperature over the previous days has made the ice just fragile enough to finally give way to the urgent water that had been dammed upstream, you might have witnessed an analogue to this book. The cracking and groaning of the ice as the water goes from trickle to gushing flood and finding the boundaries of the banks is a marvel to see and hear. Jenkinson’s words in his newest book are that bracing, urgent, and ancient water pushing through the frozen times we might find ourselves living in. This encomium to elderhood is a slow and winding affair that gathers power and purpose and new influences as the waters roll down from an altitude to and through our lives down here.” —Matthew Stillman, author of Genesis Deflowered   “Come of Age is a timely, powerful exploration of the loss of elderhood in our society. Stephen has gifted us with a compelling, poetic appraisal of the loss of and need for elderhood, interwoven with poignant and sometimes painful stories and lessons. An invaluable contribution to our society that will inspire generations to come.”  —Ramona Bolton, director, Institute of Traditional Medicine   “In Come of Age, Stephen Jenkinson invites the reader to join him in a lyrical journey as he makes the case for elderhood. His luminous and erudite prose unravels the metanarrative of Western culture as it ponders time, the deep contours of Christianity, the implications of civis Romanus sum for the creation of the entity known as The West, the forgetting of place or as he puts it ‘place literacy,’ and the joy of poetry. In these wide-ranging musings, Jenkinson reveals the poverty of a culture in which people are old but not elders while breathing life into the possibility of an elder, forged by the calamities of time, who proceeds with deep courtesy as if he or she is needed.” —Sikata Banerjee, PhD, professor of gender studies, University of Victoria   “Many of us in this modern, dominant culture of North America walk around with a deep ‘elder hunger’ but we don't recognize it as such until we meet someone willing to elder. Jenkinson makes the case that waking up to this hunger and learning how to contend with it well might be one of the most needed things in this time and place we live in. I look around me and see the hunger for convenience, efficiency, ease, freedom. and more, but perhaps we might be better served to open the pages of this book and see if a certain relationship to this old, human hunger might help us conjure the food that the soul of our culture so desperately needs.” —Tad Hargrave, founder, Marketing for Hippies   “We live in deeply troubled times. The biosphere is collapsing, the economy sputtering, and the mania for the ever-new continues its siren song. To whom and to what can young people turn that might still yet stand in the face of the storm? Enter Come of Age—a raucous and grief-soaked tangle through the annals of history, language, etymology, and, above all, a deep love of life. With fierce prose and unrelenting compassion, Stephen Jenkinson makes the case for elderhood in a time desperate for the wisdom that accrues to those willing to be aged, who are willing to know limitation and deep service to the ending of days.” — Ian MacKenzie, filmmaker, Occupy Love and Amplify Her

Got Come of Age promptly on July 3rd, and finished reading it just in time to interview the author, Stephen Jenkinson, for my podcast (A Worldview Apart). The book is incredible, and as good as Die Wise was I think this most recent offering far eclipses it. Jenkinson does indeed make a case for elderhood in a time of trouble, but if you expect him to write out his central theses in bland lettering like an academic or reporter might do, you will be left wanting. No, if you want to taste the core of his philosophy, you will have to work for it. Stephen has an astonishing mastery of the English language, and his etymological explorations add so much depth and richness to his philosophical meanderings. You will have to read, re-read, think on things for a bit, and re-read again. I suspect some will tire of this, but I adore this sort of writing, at least when the author tackles worthy subjects. And Jenkinson does indeed. Come of Age is not just a lament about the lack of elders in the Western world, it is also a forensic investigation of the roots of this outcome, one that follows an expansionist trail all the way back to the Roman Empire and perhaps even before. Ancestry, culture, monotheism, change, and even the emergence of white supremacy are touched on in due course, as are other topics. And the author approaches these with both a sense of wonder and humility that I find so refreshing in these days of fake news and alternative facts. I loved this book, and will certainly read it again.

Reading Jenkinson is not like anything else. Listening to him is the same. His answers are unhurried, thoughtful, even lyrical, and whatever the opposite of dumbed down is, they're that. I will often go back to a section I highlighted because it felt important but I couldn't quite follow, only to find every word finely crafted, his argument pure and clear. I don't know how he does it.He's one of those people who has wrestled truth to the ground and is able to write about it. His voice is important and his books ought to be required reading for all members of the human race who are working on being more human.

Jenkinson is a national treasure (well, I assume he is in Canada, where he lives, but I suppose we can claim him as a "North American Treasure". Deeply wise, funny and articulate, a great storyteller. This book won't appeal to everyone in our fast paced, highly distracted and dubiously motivated society, which Jenkinson explores in great detail, and provides alternative. His other recent book - DieWise - was also a must read, for those that find beauty in big questions and exploring the nature of a life well-lived.

Been waiting for this one! FINALLY the words for what has only been a deep gnawing feeling for a long while now. I accept your invitation. May others! Thank you Stephen Jenkinson.

Stephen Jenkinson is unlike any writer/philosopher I’ve ever read! He brilliant and lyrical prose draw me in and will not let me go. Sometimes I laugh out loud, sometimes I’m in tears. I’m learning through it all...may we all take the need to nurture and cultivate true elders again, our youth deserve no less and our future may very well depend on it!

Stephen often says that 'food makes hunger'. You forget you're hungry until the scent of food being cooked in the kitchen reaches your nostrils. And then it all comes at once. You'd gotten so caught up in whatever you were doing that you'd forgotten to eat. Or, you'd been eating the cotton candy, fast food diet of this culture and, while you forgot what real food was, your body did not. It remembered the moment it smelled it. I think many of us in this modern, dominant culture of North America, walk around with a deep 'elder hunger' but we don't recognize it as such until we meet someone willing to elder. And so, I believe that this book, a visitation of eldership itself, will make hunger. Stephen makes the case that waking up to this hunger and learning how to contend with it well might be one of the most needed things in this time and place we live in. Stephen offers no easy answers but instead, urges us to wonder: What is an elder? What is it that crafts an elder? Can one simply pronounce one's self to be an elder? What does an elder do? Is elder a noun (something you are) or a verb (something you do)? Where have the elders gone? Why did they go? Why aren't they appearing now at the time when the world needs them most? Why do we have more old people now than we've ever had and yet so few elders? How could it be that we've had a hundred years of books on personal growth, personal empowerment and leadership, a rapidly growing industry of therapists, 'shamans', healers and life coaches, more seminars and retreats than you could shake a stick at, and yet so few elders? What do we do with our hunger for them once it appears? How is it that the elder has become an archetype and no longer a part of the architecture? How has it come to pass that we are instructed to find our inner elder but there is no real-world, institution of elderhood? And, perhaps most importantly, what might it take to conjure the practice of elderhood into this world again? I look around me and see the hunger for convenience, efficiency, ease, freedom and 'more' but perhaps we might be better served to open the pages of this book and see if a certain relationship to this old, human hunger might help us conjure the food that the soul of our culture so desperately needs.
