This book is an inspiration to this codger, who has inherited the walking gene from his grandfather Peter who clocked thousands of miles in Madison, Wisconsin. I've hiked in London for over a thousand miles, in Paris for five hundred miles, and so far in New York approaching 2,500 miles, including four times around Manhattan Island -- so far.Helmreich has outdone me, but if I can last as long as Peter did, I might get to 5,000 miles.This book works great on my iPhone, and I carry several others as well, for further information or for different points of view. They include:The Encyclopedia of New York City: Second Edition -- a treasure trove of information by many excellent authors; the search function could be improved but the iPhone search function really works well enough.New York City Essential Guide: Best NYC Travel Guide for Tourists -- I have two dozen for Manhattan -- but this one is great for answering questions of how to get to various sites -- it amazes me how many people ask me directions.The Bronx: The Ultimate Guide to New York City's Beautiful Borough (Rivergate Regionals Collection) -- You simply cannot top Ultan for accuracy, enthusiasm or love of this somewhat neglected borough.Walking Brooklyn: 30 tours exploring historical legacies, neighborhood culture, side streets and waterways -- there are so many wonderful guidebooks to Brooklyn, but for a walker, this one, supplemented by Google for each walk, cannot be beat for this codger.Staten Island: A Blue Guide Travel Monograph (Blue Guides) -- smallest borough, smallest number of attractions, small guidebook fitting it all perfectly.William Helmreich, I am going to channel Peter and walk in your footsteps and see New York City through your eyes.Robert C. A few years ago I happened upon "The New York Nobody Knows: Walking 6,000 Miles in the City," by accident; if all accidents were this profitable to encouraging us to invite each other into our lives as was this book for me, then give me another shot! As I was writing my latest book William's book came along just in time to make a difference for me personally, and for insight to what I was writing.-Personally, because it challenged me to want to be more involved with people: day to day people I know, family, and perfect strangers.-Regarding the insight in my writing, "The New York Nobody Knows: Walking 6,000 Miles in the City" gave me many springboard moments from which I could continue on a theme which may have been halted if I had not read his book.William B Helmreich is one of my favorite authors.Jacob Bergen
While the book did make some interesting points and the author uses an interesting concept by walking all the city streets, the book reads more like a PhD dissertation than an enjoyable evening read. Very heavy, boring at times, and often hard to read, this book is not a "travel guide" as you would expect. I would not recommend it for the non-academic looking for a casual and interesting book about New York City.
If you think this is a guide, you are wrong.If you think this is anthropology, you are wrong.This is simply a masterpiece, something that will make New York and its uniqueness stand out at each and every page. Read this book and fall in love with the city (no matter if for the first time or again.)Blessed be the author and its priceless effort to uncover the greatst city in the whole world.
Just moved back to the area, wanted a book that would tell me about New York, and maybe break down its streets. This book takes a few anecdotal events, treats them like hard data and tries to pass it off as research. That's my main issue, read this on a 10 hour flight, was an ok read, and had the author understood that it was just entertainment, and that his limited experiences did not in fact define the city it would be fine. All in all an ok way to kill 10 hours, actually I finished it in 8. However not the book I am looking for about NYC.
A first rate account of life in this glorious and grand city from street level , which is where it is best enjoyed. If you intend to visit for the first time, if you are a newly arrived resident looking for orientation or if you are like me and a resident of more than forty years, this is a book you can enjoy and learn from. Put in in your Kindle and take a walk. You'll be glad you did.
As this reviewer is into making long walks in interesting cities, he was under the impression that this would be a travelogue of New York City; from somebody who, admirably, has walked all 6000 miles of New York City streets. That impression was erroneous, as the book is, in fact, about various aspects of the reality of New York today; these include gentrification, immigrants, criminality, and much more. After the initial disappointment, this book turned out to be intriguing, not to mention hard to put down even for a moment! It is greatly recommended, but only for those with a keen interest in the urban center of the great country that is America. Another plus is that the information within is all contemporary and current - the book was released in 2013.
Great book, and a great story of how he gathered his information, by walking every single block of NYC over four years. On a recent trip to New York, I kept thinking about that, and the fact that no matter where I was or where I looked, William Helmreich had walked there. On Christmas Eve, I gave a copy to my cousin Phyllis, who has lived in NYC for many decades, and she was delighted to have it.
