The Foreword of this 62-page Remembrance of George Washington Carver first published in 1939 states a summary of the book as follows: "While it includes all the most important events of his outer life it gives especial attention to interpreting the inner soul of the man and revealing the spiritual processes by which his remarkable discoveries were made possible. Among other things, it tells the secret of his power of talking to the flowers and letting the flowers talk to him." The book also shows the strong spiritual influence that Carver exerted over others as he deliberately drew certain chosen persons into the orb of his relationship with God where he gained the inspiration that informed the most intimate details of his work. The biography is written by Glenn Clark, a man of faith who became a close spiritual friend of Carver's; and the Foreword states that "everyone who reads this book and who catches its spirit is invited to become a member of their little 'spiritual family'."Clark describes a visit in which he was privileged to be shown Dr. Carver's laboratory workshop at Tuskegee Institute. "No books are ever brought in here," stated Carver, "and what is the need of them? Here I talk to the little peanut and it reveals its secrets to me. I lean upon the 29th verse of the first chapter of Genesis. 'And God said, Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of the earth, and every tree in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.' Carver continues, "Here I talk to the sweet potato and the clays of the hills, and they talk back to me. Here great wonders are brought forth." And he pointed to an array of bottles containing specimens of the three hundred uses for the peanut. "And up there are the clays," he added. "And again there is no need for books. Merely another promise in the Bible. 'I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help.' Carver then showed a purple clay, kept in his room, which he called "the lost purple of Egypt." "Only in one other place in the world can they find that clay," said Carver. "Where did you find it?," asked Clark. "I talked with the Lord one morning and He led me to it," replied Carver. "And when I had brought my friends and we had dug it up, they wanted to dig farther, but I said, 'No need to dig farther. This is all there is. God told me.' And sure enough, there was no more."Carver taught himself to paint and also to play the piano. He said he received these gifts through asking in prayer and claimed there was nothing he ever asked the Creator to help him do that he was not able to accomplish. He said it was simple as long as one knew how to talk to the Creator. It is "a matter of seeking Him and finding Him, as instructed in the Proverbs, "Those that seek me early shall find Me." When asked if he literally seeks God early, Carver replied, "Yes, all my life I have risen regularly at 4 o'clock and have gone into the woods and talked with God. There He gives me my orders for the day. Alone there with things I love most I gather specimens and study the great lessons Nature is so eager to teach us all.... I never grope for methods. The method is revealed the moment I am inspired to create something new. I live in the woods. I gather specimens and listen to what God has to say to me. After my morning's talk with God I go into my laboratory and begin to carry out His wishes for the day."Carver's first answer to prayer came when he was about 5 or 6 years old, and he tells Clark about it in the book. The author of the book expounds upon prayer as "an inner contact, more powerful because unseen, like and yet infinitely unlike the turning of an electric switch on or galvanic battery," and he says that "when two who positively believe in prayer come together, especially if that coming together has carried one of them across mountains and rivers and brought him on a pilgrimage of thousands of miles, then that power in prayer is especially active." The author says that even though he had had the privilege of praying with very spiritual people, he never experienced more dynamic prayer than the day he prayed with George Washington Carver, both of them believing utterly and completely in the Power of God to answer prayer.Carver was asked how he got the flowers and peanuts to give up their secrets to him, and Carver replied that anything, including people, will give up their secrets to you if you love them enough. When asked if it was his prayers or the healing oils that he made and rubbed on while praying that were the most efficacious element in his prayers for healing, he explained, "It is chiefly the oil," he replied. "....The reality in matter....the herbs of the field, the clays, the healing ointments--I think God put these things into the world to be used as instruments of healing...." Ultimately, said Carver, "It is not we little men that do the work but our blessed Creator working through us."Carver felt that anyone else could have made all of the discoveries that he himself did. He spoke highly of Thomas Edison, with whom he corresponded, and who he felt proceeded on the same basis of discovery as he did, although Edison's belief in God was not of an orthodox sort. He also spoke highly of Gandhi. Carver felt that the reason only very few people perform miracles is because they do not have a solid enough belief. The secret of miracles, said Carver, is in an absolutely solid belief in the Promises of God in the Bible.A worthwhile book. Some readers may wish to count themselves as "members of Carver's little spiritual family."

This is one of the most intimate and deeply spiritual books that I have ever read. The insight on George Washington Carver's success and creativity is truly enlightening. I suggest this book for anyone who is seeking their God given purpose in life. You will be truly changed for the better after reading this book.

Very inspiring book about a great man, Dr. George Washington Carver, a black man from the South who talked with God about many things. And many things were revealed to him about many things and Dr. Carver brought to the world many wonderful inventions and scientific discoveries from the simplest things like the lowly peanut. It is a small but rich book about a truly humble man and his impact on the world.

This book has added such depth to my spiritual journey that I find it challenging to choose words that adquately describe it. I better understand why I have been intuitively guided to reach out and touch the palm trees and roses in my garden to listen to what they have to say. I write it down even when it seems to have little relevance. This book is wonderfully refreshing and gives me even more of a sense of wonder and awe about the magic of life. I look forward to implementing Dr. Carver's early morning talk with God in my own garden.

I have respected the work of George Washington Carver who was born a slave and blessed the world with his discoveries of the many uses of peanuts. But THE MAN WHO TALKS WITH FLOWERS documents his near death at infancy, the "sale" of his mother, and the "owner's" stipulation that he be kept in the house and given free range to continue his fascination with planting seeds and watching plants grow--hence "talking with the flowers."I now am in AWE of the way he was permitted to crack the wisdom of the natural/Creation forms of life and bless all the world with his discoveries.DMJ

As much as I love history, I am embarrassed to admit that I knew very little about George Washington Carver but after hearing about his many accomplishments from a friend, I decided to pick up this book which gives an excellent overview not only of Carver's accomplishments but of the man himself.

George Washington Carver, as presented by one of "his boys." Very loving, very enthusiastic little book. This isn't a biography, more of an account of a visit to Carver by some admirers. As quoted by Clark, Carver goes into his faith, his science, and his art (because Carver was originally an art major) in a way that makes the connection between his different interests gel together.

We read this and discussed in our book club. So much admiration for Carver; what he accomplished, as well as what he overcame. His fortitude, and his relationship with the Creator. The idea of waking up each day at four o'clock in the morning, going outside, into the woods and gathering specimens while asking God to direct the activities of the day, sounds so wonderful but I doubt I'd do it once, much less on a regular basis!A short read, that will leave lasting impressions and is both uplifting and highly motivating. I love Carver, from the day I first heard his biography. What an incredible man.

Wow! This book has very good information on how to use companion plant gardening to your advantage. The idea of plants complementing each other when planted side by side is interesting while very practical as they can help each other grow together. As a beginner, I liked the information on the basic herbs and vegetable pairs to plant in my garden. Some of them are even insect/pest repellents. It also teaches how to start an effective water system and how to deal with weeds and common crop problems. The book is easy to read and comprehensive. I appreciate this form in books I buy.

I have always wanted to start gardening especially now that we moved in to a new home. I really don't know where to start so I'm lad I got this book. This one is really for beginners and will teach you everything you need to know to start. I like the part on flowers because that's what I really want for my mini garden. Really helpful especially on choosing the plants.

This book was very helpful and informative, and I am sure that I will be referring back to it in my own start to gardening. I have wanted to try it out for a few years now, but have been intimidated by what seemed a monumental task. I wasn't sure I would have the time to tend a successful garden. Luckily I've read this book just in time for spring.

Been gardening for 2 years now and I love it. If you're a beginner, start small until you're familiar with what you're growing. This book is a great reference for experienced and inexperienced gardeners alike. It helps you think about how you use things and how to plant to accommodate use and care of the plants. Highly recommended!

wow this book covers a ton of information on gardening. Ive been gardening for years and even an experienced gardener such as myself has gotten a ton of value from this book (even though the title claims the book for beginners). Thank you so much Amanda and may God bless you!

This is an awesome book for any beginner to get started with gardening. It really goes step by step and describes exactly how to grow your own plants! I would definitely recommend this for anybody needing that extra assistance with learning how to garden

Had vaguely heard about companion planting. Book gave a lot of good examples. Would have enjoyed a few pictures. Some repetition.

I could have received this information on the internet. Good lesson before buying my next informational book, though. Thanks anyway.

In "Waterloo: June 18, 1815: The Battle for Modern Europe," Andrew Roberts manages to summarize a complex battle, some of whose aspects are still controversial, in just 122 pages plus three worthwhile appendices. Roberts writes in clear, easy to understand prose, surveying the battle from the strategic to the tactical levels. He includes a number of well-chosen vignettes at the individual level to provide a sense of scale of the battle, as well as necessary explanation on the equipment and organizations of the participating armies.Roberts quickly touches a number of the academic controversies about the battle. Among others, these include the status of Napoleon's health during the Waterloo Campaign, the extent of Wellington's surprise at the French crossing of the border, the placement of allied troops at Hal to block a possible French flanking manuever on the Mont St. Jean position, and the cooperation between Wellington and Blucher. In each case, he deftly mentions the nature of the controversy, offers a brief opinion, and moves on. Serious students of Waterloo may find this approach overly simplified, but it should suffice for the average reader. Roberts does go to some effort to mention the the contributions of all members of the allied coalition that fought at Waterloo, including Belgian and Dutch units that are often neglected. The treatment of the course of the battle of Waterloo follows a commonly used breakdown of the combat into five phases. Roberts' real gift is his ability to present the story of Waterloo in a manner that covers the significant details but can be followed by the average reader. Of necessity, Roberts has simplified a great deal of information to achieve the short format; this work is focused on the battle rather than the larger campaign of the hundred days. He includes a nice bibliography for those readers seeking more detail. There is also a nice selection of maps and photos to orient the reader. This book is highly recommended for the casual reader seeking a managable and enjoyable summary of the Battle of Waterloo.

Is there any battle in history as famous as Waterloo? Although there are many remarkable battles, very few are as dramatic, consequential, or well known as the one that took place on a rainy June day in an otherwise unremarkable little village in the Belgian hinterland.Just over a year ago, My wife and I visited the battlefield for the first time (I admit that the site had little interest to me back when I lived in Brussels). Today, it contains an excuisit and elaborate visiting center, complete with Video and graphic presentations, and a bookstore in which you can find materials about the battlefield in almost every European language and several non-European ones. After the impressive Visiting Center, the site itself is a great disappointmnet; It contains a tall hill constructed many years after the battle, from which you can see the field as none of the participants could at the time. I must confess that, gazing downwards at the slight slopes of Mont St. Jean, I've been utterly incapable of imagining the carnage that brought me, along with millions of other tourists, to that spot, almost two centuries after it has ended.Although I've been to the battlefield, and read a highly entertaining account of the campaign in David King's masterly book on the Congress of Vienna (Vienna, 1814: How the Conquerors of Napoleon Made Love, War, and Peace at the Congress of Vienna), Andrew Roberts' account gives the most succicent description of the campaign and its underlying strategy. If it then dwelves too much on the tactics for my tastes, that surely says more about my limited interest in military history than on the merits of the work; On the other hand, true devotees of l'Histoire Militaire are unlikely to find much that is new in this slender tomb.Napoleon's return from Alba brought about a new European crisis, with the various powers of the day gathering armies with all the speed they could master to confront the Corsican Emperor. Napoleon's prefered strategy against the numerically superior powers was to match and defeat each army in turn, before they united together. In June 1815, Napoleon's enemies had two armies in the field: a mostly Prussian one, led by General Blucher, and a mostly English one led by The Duke of Wellington. On the 16th of June, Napoleon split his forces and engaged both armies; The British held their ground, and the Prussian fled... but not far enough. The failure to destroy either Blucher or Wellington's forces meant that time was running out for Napoleon. Superb generalship would be required to destroy Wellington's armies before the Prussians could join them. The emperor, past his prime and shorn of his best henchmen, did not rise to the challenge. The 17th of June contained little action, while Wellington positioned his forces on a ground of his chosing; The battle for Europe waited for the morrow.Foul weather delayed the attack, as Napoleon waited for the ground to dry. Waterloo was a relatively small battlefield, and allowed little place for Napoleon's usual prefered manouvers. The assaults would be direct, brutal, and hopefully decisive. They weren't. Through the chaos, and despite frequent setbacks, the English forces held firm. Sucsessive attempts to break the English line failed. The last attack, by Napoleon's elite Imperial Guard, came as late as 7:30 PM. By that time, Blucher's forces were joining the melee in droves. Napoleon's armies broke. The conquerors of Napoleon met around 9 O'clock in a little inn, one that was on Napoleon's side of the battle just hours earlier. "Quelle Affaire!" proclaimed Blucher to his English counterpart. It is Ironic that the only language they shared was that of their defeated foes. Some 120,000 Men died in the Waterloo campaign. Seventy one thousand of them in the battle itself. Napoleon's reign would be over within weeks of that fateful say. The campaign marked the beginning of Europe's long peace - a peace that lasted, albeit with isolated and sharp interruptions, from that June battle until another June day, almost a century later, when a young Austrian was assassinated in Sarajevo.

For class

Brilliant use of eyewitness accounts. Read it in one sitting

Short book on the battle of Waterloo. Very easy read by a great writer of war and history books. Brilliant

Fascinating, making history alive, could be longer. It is very fine detail the battle maps, i think I will read this many times.

Brief, to the point, balanced, very informative. The definitive book for the uninitiated, and a needed addition to the sophisticated libraries. To be read.

If you are a history buff and student of military strategy this is definitely a book for you. The author presents the decisive battle as a long chess game between two military geniuses: Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington. Aside of the grandeur and battle between the Anglo Allies and the French Arme', the author examines the psyche of Napoleon, and Wellington, The author peels away and reveals the two men's weaknesses and errors during this battle. Their relationships with their various commanders and allies: Blucher, Ney, Uxbridge, Pitcon, Grouchy and Soult are also given their importance in a well told narrative. The author also includes letters and reports from the battlefield Overall, this is a brief but comprehensive record of the Battle of Waterloo which should be read by any student of the battlefield.
