Amazon.com Review

In 1898 John H. Patterson arrived in East Africa with a mission to build a railway bridge over the Tsavo River. What started out as a simple engineering problem, however, soon took on almost mythical proportions as Patterson and his mostly Indian workforce were systematically hunted by two man-eating lions over the course of several weeks. During that time, 100 workers were killed, and the entire bridge-building project ground to a halt. As if the lions weren't enough, Patterson had to guard his back against his own increasingly hostile and mutinous workers as he set out to track and kill the man-eaters. This larger-than-life tale forms the basis of the entertaining film The Ghost and the Darkness, but for readers who want to know the whole--and true--story, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo comes straight from the great white-hunter's mouth. Patterson's account of the lions' reign of terror and his own subsequent attempts to kill them is the stuff of great adventure, and his unmistakably Victorian manner of telling it only adds to the thrill. Consider this description of the aftermath of an attack by the lions: "...we at once set out to follow the brutes, Mr. Dalgairns feeling confident that he had wounded one of them, as there was a trail on the sand like that of the toes of a broken limb.... we saw in the gloom what we at first took to be a lion cub; closer inspection, however, showed it to be the remains of the unfortunate coolie, which the man-eaters had evidently abandoned at our approach. The legs, one arm and half the body had been eaten, and it was the stiff fingers of the other arm trailing along the sand which had left the marks we had taken to be the trail of a wounded lion...." This classic tale of death, courage, and terror in the African bush is still a page-turner, even after all these years.

Rather boring and too long. It's just not my 'cup of tea' - I prefer more 'meat' rather than a journal type story.

After watching the movie "Ghost and the Darkness" I wanted to read the original story that was the basis for the movie. At first I bought the paperback book of the same title as the movie, however that was essentially a carbon copy of the movie. In the back of the book was a reference to the original story, "The Man-Eaters Of Tsavo". I ordered it and what a great story! The original story is even more compelling than the movie. I liked it so much I bought a second copy for a friend that is an avid hunter and sportsman in his own right.

The Man-Eaters of Tsavo by J. H. Patterson is available in several editions. It's sort of confusing which one to buy. Here are some notes on each edition:The Man-Eaters of Tsavo (Peter Capstick Libary Series).Publisher: St. Martins Press, 1985. 384 pages. When The Man-Eaters of Tsavo was originally published in 1907, it contained a wealth of photos and a map. Photos appeared on every two to three pages. These photos showed many local scenes, as well as the infamous lions. These photos are very valuable for establishing a sense of place that words alone can't do. Beware of inexpensive reprints that omit all the photos and the map. The quality of the photo reproductions is not great in the Capstick Library edition. But these are the best looking photos in any edition currently available. This edition is virtually identical to the original book. The page sequence is the same, with only the addition of some new preface pages. This is the book to buy; however, for some strange reason it's hard to find on Amazon. If you search for "tsavo", you'll find used copies of this book at horribly inflated prices. But this book is still in print. Search for "tsavo capstick" and you'll find it--along with very reasonably priced used copies (under $10).Man Eaters Of Tsavo [Hardcover].Publisher: St. Martins Press, 1985. 384 pages. If you search for "tsavo" on Amazon, this is the hardcover edition of this book that you'll find. You'll likely see no trace of the Capstick edition. Well, it's the same book. Unfortunately, "Man Eaters of Tsavo [Hardcover]" is being sold like it's a collector's item, at inflated prices. Don't fall for this. Get the Capstick Library book listed above. The Man-eaters of Tsavo.Publisher: SMK Books, 2009. 152 pages. If all you want is the text, if you don't care about seeing approximately 100 photographs, if you don't want a map, then this is a reasonably priced alternative. All the text from the original edition is compressed onto 152 pages, in a tiny font. The map and all photos have been removed. You can get a used hardcover copy of the Capstick Library book for only $2 to $3 more than the SMK book, so I would find it hard to justify buying the SMK edition. The Man-Eaters of Tsavo: And Other East African Adventures (Classic Reprint). Publisher: Forgotten Books, 2010. 360 pages. This is a duplicate of the original book. A library copy was pulled and photographed page by page. The reproductions of the photographs from the original book are horribly muddy--and virtually worthless. Strangely, if you search for "tsavo" on Amazon, this book seems to be a reasonably priced alternative. So many people have apparently purchased this edition. Don't be fooled. Look for the Capstick Library book instead, which only costs a few dollars more and has better reproduction of the photos (as well as a few extra pages in the preface). The Lions of Tsavo: Exploring the Legacy of Africa's Notorious Man-Eatersby Bruce D. PattersonThis is a different Patterson entirely. And thus a different book. Bruce Patterson is a scientist who recently studied the lions of Tsavo, while J. H. Patterson is the hunter who shot the infamous Tsavo lions. The scientist's book is good. But you should be aware that this isn't the tale told by the hunter.Ghosts of Tsavo : Stalking the Mystery Lions of East Africaby Philip CaputoThis a contemporary tale of a journalist following in J.H. Patterson's steps and investigating the lions of Tsavo. This is a good book. The first chapter is incredible as he retells the story of the lions that killed a mind-boggling number of railroad workers (possibly over 120 people died). The subsequent chapters are of a more personal nature as Caputo journeys to Africa and looks for the maneless Tsavo lions.I hope this helps!

This book has all the charm and grace that it should. While he is most indeed a hunter it is written in such way that you can't be angry about it. The writer is very detailed about his adventures and they're a wonderful read. He's smart charming and funny I laughed a few times he also writes about all the different tribes he mets and that alone is worth reading. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes English books and anyone who wants to learn more about the history of Africa.

Incredible account of dangers, hardships, courage and the pursuit of survival in Victorian Africa. This is a account of lions who seem to be almost supernatural and always one step ahead of man. If you like sitting on the edge of your seat, this is a read for you. It's a story you will always remember.

A well-written, easy read, without the usual stuffy, pretentious overstated prose characteristic of the period in which it was written. Very enjoyable. And the story goes well beyond the Tsavo incident, into the constructing of his bridges and his trophy-hunting. Even the insanity of killing everything in sight---while pillaging Africa---was made tolerable reading by the author. Over all, a revealing glimpse into the mind of a Victorian "English gentleman" hunter---which should give any sane person pause, and thank the gods that the only "proper Englishmen" are now just figureheads. I hope.

Colonel Patterson's first hand account of dealing with the Maneating Lions of Tsavo is riveting reading indeed! Also entertaining is his description of conditions and happenings along the trackway and his interactions with workers and natives alike. While the actual settling of the lions makes for the highlight of the book, Colonel Patterson's handling of the mutiny of the workers and their conspiracy to murder him is capital reading. Colonel Patterson was a very brave man who never flinched from what he saw as his duty and you will be glad to have gotten to know this humble hero after finishing the book.

From Library Journal

The late Sam Walton was one of the shrewdest and richest merchants in America. Centered on the building of his Wal-Mart empire, his book, like fellow magnate Sandra Kurtzig's CEO: Building a $400 Million Company from Ground Up ( LJ 5/1/91), is light on biography. However, readers will enjoy the folksy narrative of the small-town millionaire who revolutionized retail distribution. Walton also addresses accusations against him, such as running the competition out of town. Coauthor Huey does a fine job of incorporating candid testimonials from family members and associates, who thought Walton's ideas were sometimes silly. Shortly after Walton's death, the book was given an overly sentimental postscript (a minor detraction) and rushed into print. Highly recommended for public and academic business collections.- Rebecca A. Smith, Harvard Business Sch. Lib.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Sam Walton was truly a testimony of the American Dream. What a story! What an inspiration!Sam's story of Wal-Mart tells of passion and purpose. What's possible if you believe in putting the customer first, showing love and care for your partners and your associates, and giving back to the community that enables free enterprise. One lesson most important of all is to persist. Also as Sam says, "To succeed in this world, you have to change all the time."This book also illustrates the journey that faces all entrepreneurs of overcoming adversity and obstacles. It would give you inspiration to succeed in your venture. This is a gem of a book. Thank you, Sam for sharing your remarkable story. Invest in this book, you will be glad you did. The book you don't read won't help.

If your wanting to open your own merchandising store, and your curious how the logistics of it, might work.. this book is not really for you. Now, if your wanting to see what it takes to succeed and gain customers, and see how such an amazing thing like walmart has happened.. well this books may be for you.If your just curious about the founder behind walmart, and you get a kick out of adventure.. then check this out!I bought this book on a whim, up to this point I had never concerned myself with the "autobiography" type categories... but after buying this and reading, and learning how this man made it.. well it's changed my attitude a bit.Well worth a read. This is just a side, but maybe Elon Musk will repeat this success but with space travel and battery technology? Lets hope so.

"Made in America" is as unassuming as its author, Sam Walton. It is written in very colloquial plain "American" English, so you can almost image Mr. Walton, in his death bed, dictating this little book of wisdom. It is filled with many pearls of wisdom, on how to be a small business owner, on never giving up and always trying new things. I am surprised more people don't read this little known book, given that Sam Walton has to go down in history (maybe Bill Gates?) as the most successful entrepreneur in American history. The book is not filled with technical lexicon found in MBA programs. It is a non nonsense book, told from Walton's perspective. I recommend this book.

Interesting to read all the things that Sam Walton did to make this company the huge success that it is and to see how many of those same elements are consistently missing from almost every store I visit today. Too bad Sam, you built a great company but the people who run it now only care about the bottom line.

This is an excellent book from quite an interesting character.... and by that I mean one of the richest and most productive people who ever walked the planet. When you look at what this guy built, how could you not read his personal story? I mean, look at what a massive thing he built! And he did it from very humble roots with brains and ambition. I really admire this guy after reading this book, and it is well written and interesting.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Sam Walton's autobiography. This book is 26 yrs old now, but the story of how Sam built the Walmart empire from scratch and forever changed the retail industry is timeless. As expected, he built it the old fashioned way with lots of hard work and a passion to create something bigger and better. I highly recommend it for anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit.

Sam Walton dries to come across as a humble man with a lot of money, but this book is full of "self" praises. Half of the book is him talking about how other people think he's the greatest person since Jesus. His favorite thing in life is ladies panties, you will know what I'm talking about after reading this book.

Great story very much personalized by Sam Walton telling the story of the beginning and history of Wal-Mart from its beginnings till his death. At the same time almost an Autobiography of Sam. Highly recommended reading especially if you like American business and are a devoted Capitalist.

Tubby the Tuba (Book & CD), by Paul Tripp

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–Cole presents a picture-book version of this beloved composition, written by Tripp with music by George Kleinsinger, which was first recorded in 1946. Tubby the Tuba is tired of just repeating oompah, oompah and wants to perform a melody like the violins or the flute. That night, while sitting by the river, the unhappy tuba meets a bullfrog, who sings a beautiful tune. The next day, inspired by his new friend, Tubby enthusiastically plays the melody for the orchestra, winning the acceptance of the conductor and the other instruments. The colorful cartoons, showing an apple-cheeked Tubby clothed in a T-shirt and red sneakers, create a retro mood without looking dated. This title stands alone as a great introduction to the orchestra for children. However, reading the story while listening to the accompanying CD, which is narrated by the late author, is even better. A good choice for classroom sharing and individual reading.–Marilyn Ackerman, Brooklyn Public Library, NY Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

The orchestra's tuba, Tubby grows tired of supplying the steady "oompah" background and longs to play melodies. Discouraged by the other instruments' reaction to his one attempt, Tubby ambles off one evening and finds inspiration down by the river, where a friendly frog offers help and encouragement. Written by actor Tripp as a child's introduction to the orchestra, the musical story of Tubby the Tuba was released as a short, puppet-based animated film in 1947, a book in 1954, and a longer animated feature video in the 1970s. Cole's colorful retro-style artwork endows the instrument-characters great emotional expressiveness. He uses the large format to good advantage, creating scenes that are varied in their effects and show up well from a distance. The accompanying CD, which slides into a pocket inside the back cover, features Tripp reading his story with orchestral accompaniment, as it was meant to be heard. Sometimes paired with Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, this child-friendly introduction to the orchestra looks very appealing in Cole's picture-book version. Very nice book and CD. I had the original LP when I was a kid and this is a remake - but with the author narrating and a good orchestra is very very close to that original first recording. Got it for the grandchildren to introduce yet another generation to orchestra music.

My 4 year old loves this book! Before introducing the CD, I read it to her every night for a week so she would know when to turn the pages. She's listened to it at least once a day for the past month and has the entire thing memorized. Sometimes she'll even read it out loud to herself - from memory - without the CD. Needless to say I feel like I've gotten more than my money's worth. The narrator is wonderfully dramatic. The music is beautiful.

My 2-year-old son loves to play the CD and "read" this book. It's a sweet story and I love that he is getting to hear and learn about instruments of the orchestra.

I am so glad I got this, more for me than for my kids. Classic Tubby the Tuba story on the CD. The book follows the CD, but the pictures are more updated than the old classic cartoon. Still a winner!

Very cute story. Narrated nicely. Orchestra parts highlight the text. Super introduction to the orchestra.

I teach this to my first grade general music classes every year. Excellent introduction to the orchestra and gives an opportunity to assess for understanding of HIGH and LOW sounds.

This is a wonderful book and a great way to introduce young children to musical instruments.

Our kids love this book! We have read it hundreds of times. They also really enjoy listening to the CD when mommy and daddy get tired of reading the book over and over. :-)

About the Author

Since 1973, Rick Steves has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. Rick produces a best-selling guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and organizes small-group tours that take over 30,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of more than 100 well-traveled staff members at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, WA (near Seattle). When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic and social justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. To recharge, Rick plays piano, relaxes at his family cabin in the Cascade Mountains, and spends time with his son Andy and daughter Jackie. This map is pretty much useless. I would return it but the cost is not worth the hassle. "Why?" you ask. The map has a map of Italy on one side and maps of several cities (Rome, Venice, Florence . . .) on the other. The Italy map is only good to see where the different cities are in relation to each other. Very few roads are shown. The map tries to do too much, showing the mainland and the larger islands on the same sheet. This makes the size of the mainland very small. Most roads are not marked and are printed with too fine lines and too faint colors. On the other side, the various city maps only show the centers of the cities. Maybe this is supposed to be used with Mr. Steves' multitude of other books; it have some value that way. As a stand alone map to use while planning a trip to Italy, it's useless. It IS printed on very nice, waterproof paper. Whoopee!

While i love Rick Steve's and almost all of his "stuff". I found this map useless. I ended up buying the Rand-McNally road atlas instead.

THIs map was too small and was no where near detailed enough for driving through the Italian country.

I actually came across this fold-out map planning guide at my local Barnes & Noble store when I was browsing the international travel section for a gift, but decided to check pricing on here before spending $9 at the store. Good thing I did, because it's almost half the price on here! Because I saw it in the store initially, I knew exactly what I was getting, but I do want to point out that this is simply an old school fold-out map of Italy--it is not a pocket guidebook, etc.I am planning a trip to Italy with my dad for next year, and really I just needed something to put an airline gift card in that would be fitting with the theme, so I got this and a calendar. I will say that the paper is good quality, feels relatively durable and is nice and smooth. Can't complain!

First of all, I love Rick Steve's books (and products) and use his books and videos exclusively.HOWEVER...there is a major problem with his books. He's got these great city maps...great stuff. But on the maps, where he points out places of interest, there is no indication of where the review is. Argh! For instance, you look at a city map, and it shows 10 restaurants. You're in one section of the area, and see 4 restaurants close to where you are. The next thing you'd do, of course, would be to check out the 4 reviews...alas, though, the 4 reviews are on different pages, and you have no idea where they are.I literally spent 2 hours writing on these little maps, putting page numbers next to each restaurant/place of interest, etc. What a pain! It would take the Rick Steve's editors a couple hours to do this, and wouldn't take up much room (for instance, where it says on the bottom, "2. - XXX Restaurant", you could say, "2. - XXX Restaurant, p. 53." How hard would that be? Yeesh!

Am a huge believer in planning the trip details and itinerary ahead of time. I usually spend good amount of time doing online search, visiting travel forums and reading about the place/history before we set forth for one of our trips.Rick Steve's Italy, was the only paperback guide we had. I had booked the hotels based on some online surveys and some from Rick's book. During our 16 day trip, this book proved to be the best possible choice. We visited: Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre, Amalfi and Rome. Beyond the amazing culture, art and museums, Italy is quiet a gastronomical delight. Some of the best restaurants we went to were based on Rick's suggestions. Even the hole in wall prosciutto and wine place turned out to be a gem.Hints about booking ahead, and planning the trips to museums, turned out to quiet a time saver and invaluable. We had absolutely no hiccups and Cinque Terre which Rick Steve's highly recommends, turned out to be the highlight of our trip. We kept bumping against people who were using his book as well, and heard nothing but good things about the places/hotels/restaurants recommended by the book. Personally this one book was sufficient and excellent companion guide for an in-depth coverage for our Italy travel needs.Would highly recommend getting this book for your travels, especially if this is your first time in Italy and you plan to travel independently.. backpacking as we did.

I expected the maps of Rome and Venice to be sufficient to allow us to walk the cities. The detail of the maps and size of the maps is really not sufficient to navigate a walking tour. They will work as reference and should be okay for general use just not large or detail enough to do your sightseeing on your own

Planning a trip to Italy for next year and doing research on all the places we are going. This map is very detailed and shows close-ups of popular areas. Goes well with the Rick Steves' book about Italy.
