This book was such a blessing to me in a difficult time. I went the traditional medicine route for the first year after my diagnosis and was MISERABLE by the end of that year and saw no marked improvement to my condition. My doctor wanted to put me on another medication and started talking invasive procedures and I said, "no more." People were telling me that I just needed to get used to my life like this now- I couldn't accept that. I decided to go the natural route for a year and see what happened. I absolutely believed I could heal, not just improve. I have felt SO MUCH better since implementing the processes outlined in this book and working with my aunt who's a holistic health coach. While I'm not 100% I can say that I've had a good 6 mos without a flare (just some pain here and there, knock on wood). I still will use it for reference and healing if/when I need it again. If you are out there and the situation seems hopeless please try this method. I pray it works for many who suffer with this debilitating health issue.
This is a medical condition mainstream medicine doesn't know much about: not the cause or the treatment for it. And all the specialists will tell you that there is no cure for it. It is amazing that how a patient knew more about this subject then all the specialists I had seen and then she was able to cure herself.The writer mentions in the book that one third of all the patients who commit suicide due to their medical condition have cystitis. Unless one has cystitis, it is not possible to describe the unbearable and excruciating pain. When I read this book years ago, I could no longer bear the pain which took over my life and the fact so called treatments wrecked my body and made me much more sicker to the point I couldn't get throught the day.The turning point in my health started with looking at the whole picture after reading in this book that cystitis is not a medical condition by itself but related to other medical problems. Not only I am grateful to this author who has improved the quality of my life but I learned a lot from the reviews of the patients who bought products for this condition. Most importantly, she has given me hope. And there is a lot to be said about that. Thank you....According to Dr. Bach, the co-author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" the cause of cystitis is excessive antibiotic use. My symptoms started with allergies and recurring ear infections followed by severe chemical sensitivities, allergies, cystitis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome. While I was a picture of health and a person full of life, my body literally fell apart while going through menopause.What initially helped ease the severe pain was keeping my bladder alkaline by eating a handful of Romaine lettuce or taking 250 mg of calcium with my meals. After reading collagen type I and III helping with tissue healing, I started taking one gram of collagen 2-3 times a day. Combination of keeping my bladder alkaline by having Romaine lettuce with meals and collagen tablets kept irritation and pain under control. I think collagen covered the ulcerations caused by antibiotic use. However what really started the healing process was treating hormonal deficiency by taking bio-identical hormones (estriol, progesterone, and DHEA), Schisandra (A Chinese Herb which acts like a steroids without the side effects) to treat adrenal fatigue and being put on Armour Thyroid to treat hypothyroidism caused by adrenal fatigue.After doing a lot of research as a lay person, I have discovered that most chronic disease is caused by deficiency in adrenal (cortisol) and thyroid hormones, especially chronic out of control inflammation anywhere in the body (Cystitis is one of them) . I also found out most bladder problems have to do with deficiency in estrogen hormones and incontinence in elderly is caused by testosterone deficiency.To anybody suffering from any chronic disease (Since men and women have the same hormones in their bodies in different amounts), I recommend reading Part I and Part III of "Women's Hormones" by Dr. Pamela Smith and watching Dr. Frank Shallenberger's free educational videos on his website called "Managing Your Thyroid and Adrenal Glands. The Secret of Healing Chronic Disease" and "Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement". His new book, "Bursting With Energy", is pretty good also and is about slowing aging and preventing chronic disease.I reviewed each book which has helped me in my healing on Amazon.com. There is not enough room here but you can find the list of these books at the end of my review of Dr. Pamela Smith's book "Women's Hormones."
Although I did like this book, and truly agree with many things the author says, it did not help me. I tried her recommendations for almost a year. SERIOUSLY, went organic make up, all natural household cleaners (vinegar est), ate all organic foods, exercised, did healing baths, made sure I did not stay constipated, bought TONS of herbs and supplements and tried them how she specified, SPENT TONS OF TIME AND MONEY into trying this program, plus MAJOR life changes. And I am still in so much pain. IC in the scientific community is thought to be inflammation and the inner layer of the bladder wall is not there, causing the urine to cause pain. Marshmallow root may sooth but it does not rebuild that layer, and no matter how healthy I was, it did not rebuild that wall on it own.I do not give this a one star because following her recommendations of being less toxic, has made my body overall feel MUCH better. But my bladder does not feel better, just my body. SOMETIMES the marshmallow MILDY soothed, but I have been in so much pain a MILD soother did not do much for me, maybe for someone with a less severe case can find relief. I can say I did not stop taking pain medication which could be a source of toxins preventing me from healing. She says in her book after trying her stuff for a little while you wont need pain medication anymore, but that never happened to me. I hurt and always hurt, and I wish this book would have been the solution but it was not. I hope some day there is a true solution to our pain and a real cure will be discovered.
The author has some good information for those suffering from IC. She has put her heart and soul in to writing this book and seems to genuinely want to help IC sufferers.I did found the book quite difficult to read because of the repetition; and she seems to have tocover herself all the time always letting the reader know she is not a health care professional. It's unfortunate she felt she had to state this at every turn with her advice. However, after I got in to it I was appreciative of the effort she took to pass on her experience. IC sufferers need all the help they can get from people like Catherine Simone; we certainly do not get it from the medical profession.I found the book to be rather expensive and did not like the binding; it is not easy to fold back the pages. However, this is a minor point.
