Review

"The New Neotropical Companion describes, explains, and provides insight into the unique ecosystems of the Neotropics. . . . Written by an ornithologist who is also a birder and who embraces the world from an ecological viewpoint that sees birds as part of larger systems of evolution, succession, and mutualism, The New Neotropical Companion is the textbook-that-is-not-a-textbook you always wanted to read, though you may not know it yet. . . . [The New Neotropical Companion] will prepare you to walk through the rainforest and observe Neotropical birds. You may even begin to feel a sense of belonging in this very different world."---10,000 Birds blog, "The New Neotropical Companion is a sweeping account of tropical ecology, covering not only rain forests but also cloud forests, rivers, savannas, and mountains. If you plan to travel or have already taken a trip to South America, Central America, or the Caribbean, you will learn a lot in these pages. . . . Who could ask for a more knowledgeable companion than this book." (Bird Watching Magazine)"This new edition is filled with color photographs of more common species that should give any tropical newcomer much on which to feast."---Gerry Rising, Buffalo Spree"I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in tropical America. I consider it 'must reading' for anyone who will be spending much time in the Neotropics." (Wildlife Activist)"A well-needed overview of one of the most ecologically complex regions of the planet. . . . Both neotropical neophytes and seasoned biologists stand to benefit from this read. Kricher is to be commended for bringing us this volume. I highly recommend this book for all of the diverse audiences it so aptly serves."---Allen M. Young, Quarterly Review of Biology"Praise for A Neotropical Companion: "John Kricher's Neotropical Companion is an incredible accretion of facts, figures and anecdotes. (Journal of Natural History)"Praise for A Neotropical Companion: "Well-illustrated and beautifully written. . . . [A Neotropical Companion] contains a wealth of information, explanations and curious facts about the region's natural history, and is the kind of overview that Alfred Russel Wallace, Henry Bates and other early scientific explorers of Amazonia would have given fingers from their collecting hand to have possessed.""---Adrian Barnett, New Scientist"Praise for A Neotropical Companion: "Kricher has created a highly readable, comprehensive overview of Neotropical ecosystems, which can serve on many levels: as a traveler's companion, as an introductory text for students, or as recreational reading material for those interested in tropical ecosystems."" (Choice)"For visitors from the temperate zone, the nature of the American tropics is exciting but very confusing. The dazzling diversity of plants and animals can seem overwhelming. In The New Neotropical Companion, John Kricher, a gifted scientist and communicator, brings order out of this chaos. With clear, lively language, he describes the patterns of tropical ecology and natural history in an accessible and engaging way―it's both tremendously educational and fun to read. With clear, lively language, he describes the patterns of tropical ecology and natural history in an accessible and engaging way--it's both tremendously educational and fun to read. Now enhanced with abundant photographs, The New Neotropical Companion is essential reading for anyone intrigued by the wonderful biodiversity south of the border."--Kenn Kaufman, author of Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America"My original copy of John Kricher's ‘little green book' is stained and battered from three decades of tropical travel--which is why I'm delighted that Kricher has produced The New Neotropical Companion, a truly landmark revision of his classic: bigger, better, lushly illustrated, but with the same chatty, accessible tone that makes John the perfect guide to the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Whether you're going to the tropics for the first time or the twentieth, this superb new edition is utterly indispensable reading."--Scott Weidensaul, author of Living on the Wind"Seeing my beloved Neotropical Companion updated, laced with new studies, and bursting with lavish color photographs is an answered prayer. Kricher is the ebullient professor we all wish we'd had, truly our companion on a quest to understand what makes the tropics so hot, and so cool. In this compulsively readable volume, he has constructed something much like the tropics themselves: astoundingly diverse, mysterious, colorful, and rich with the unexpected."--Julie Zickefoose, author of Baby Birds: An Artist Looks into the Nest

I cut my Neotropical teeth on the “Little Green Book”, John Kricher’s original A Neotropical Companion published in 1989. It covered the basics of Neotropical ecology and was well written in an easy but informative style suitable for the layperson. The 2nd edition published eight years later was neither little nor green, although arguably still compact enough to carry in the field. It incorporated the considerable amount of new research in Neotropical ecology published since 1989 and also reflected the author’s expanding geographical knowledge of the Neotropics, which now included the vast Amazon basin. But perhaps most welcome were the photographs, a feature lacking in the first edition. Although Kricher refers to The New Neotropical Companion as the latest edition of A Neotropical Companion, it is much more than that. Kricher has a knack for writing to his intended audience, and nothing reflects this better than The New Neotropical Companion. His ability to present what can often be a complex subject in a vibrant and readable, yet scholarly, style is apparent on every page. And it is clear that Kricher has done his homework. After two earlier versions that reflected his growing understanding of this vast region, and an upper-level college textbook called Tropical Ecology that was global in scope, he was well positioned to take A Neotropical Companion to the next level. And he has done just that. While written for the layperson, The New Neotropical Companion includes a bibliography of more than 800 books, papers, and articles on the Neotropics for the reader who wants more. And while the 2nd edition was enhanced with a few photographs, The New Neotropical Companion has photographs on nearly every page, all of exceptional quality, and most with informative captions that capture the essence of the region’s vast biodiversity and functional ecology. In fact, I will go so far as to say that the reader can obtain a working knowledge of the basic principles of Neotropical ecology just from reading the photo captions and text boxes that often accompany them. But that by no means is to suggest that the reader skip the text. While the photos and their captions offer a good overview, the real gems, the lifeblood of the book, are in its text. I especially liked the section near the end of the book on climate change, something everyone should read regardless of their level of interest in the Neotropics. With the plethora of photographs and enhanced and expanded text, The New Neotropical Companion is a must-read for anyone with an interest in the natural world who is planning to visit or is already living in the Neotropics. While it is a bit heftier than its two predecessors, it certainly should not be left at home or back in the hotel when venturing into the field. It is still plenty small enough to fit in the back seat of your car.

This book is riveting and highly readable, explaining the interconnectedness of life in the neotropics from ants to birds to bats to trees and flowers. The author conveys his excitement and wonder and makes you feel as if you are right there walking through the tropical forest. He explains different theories and the pros and cons without judgement and keeps his ego out of it. This book gave me a deep sense of the interdependence of plants and animals, soil, sky, and water. Even though I live in North America this book changed how I look at the trees and plants around me. I am now reading his textbook Tropical Ecology to learn even more.

I bought this before heading to Ecuador and I'm glad I did. It's a bit heavy but well worth the weight. Very accessible, clearly written, nice balance of background and theory to basic description. It anticipated and answered the questions I would have.

Wonderful update to a classic reference book for travellers to the neotropics. Clear and interesting writing explaining the complexities of the ecosystems encountered. Great photographs. Excellent Kindle version for reading on iPad. Maintains color and resolution of original photographs.

This is an exceptionally informative and lavishly illustrated book. It is scientifically rigorous yet completely accessible to the educated layperson. For those of us living in temperate zones, this comprehensive tome (too large to serve as a convenient field guide) provides deep insights into an amazing ecosystem, elegantly written by a true expert in the field.

The BEST book out there for people who want to learn about the new world tropics. !
