Review

“Stochastic Modeling by Nicolas Lanchier is an introduction to stochastic processes accessible to advanced students and interdisciplinary scientists with a background in graduate-level real analysis. The work offers a rigorous approach to stochastic models used in social, biological and physical sciences ... . Stochastic modeling provides a link between applied research in stochastic models and the literature covering their mathematical foundations.”  (Ben Dyhr, Mathematical Reviews, May, 2018)“There is a wide spectrum of topics discussed in this book. … It is also interesting to find several classical examples with all details. … The text is so carefully written and checked, that I was unable to find a single typo. The book can be strongly recommended to those students and teachers who want to be in line with modern probability theory and its diverse applications.” (Jordan M. Stoyanov, zbMATH 1360.60002, 2017)

From the Back Cover

Three coherent parts form the material covered in this text, portions of which have not been widely covered in traditional textbooks. In this coverage the reader is quickly introduced to several different topics enriched with 175 exercises which focus on real-world problems. Exercises range from the classics of probability theory to more exotic research-oriented problems based on numerical simulations. Intended for graduate students in mathematics and applied sciences, the text provides the tools and training needed to write and use programs for research purposes. The first part of the text begins with a brief review of measure theory and revisits the main concepts of probability theory, from random variables to the standard limit theorems. The second part covers traditional material on stochastic processes, including martingales, discrete-time Markov chains, Poisson processes, and continuous-time Markov chains. The theory developed is illustrated by a variety of examples surrounding applications such as the gambler’s ruin chain, branching processes, symmetric random walks, and queueing systems. The third, more research-oriented part of the text, discusses special stochastic processes of interest in physics, biology, and sociology. Additional emphasis is placed on minimal models that have been used historically to develop new mathematical techniques in the field of stochastic processes: the logistic growth process, the Wright–Fisher model, Kingman’s coalescent, percolation models, the contact process, and the voter model. Further treatment of the material explains how these special processes are connected to each other from a modeling perspective as well as their simulation capabilities in C and Matlabâ„¢.

Rapture Practice, by Aaron Hartzler

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-Hartzler grew up in an Evangelical Christian home, where he was taught that the Rapture might happen any minute. As he grew into his teen years, he began to question this belief and to be drawn to more worldly things-movies, rock music, plays, literature, and kissing. To a secular audience, Hartzler's parents' rules about whom he can befriend and how he can live his life may come across as draconian, but the author is open and fair about how they lived their beliefs and how they always loved him, even as their rules drove him away. Hartzler is honest about his sexual encounters with girls (and boys) and about underage drinking that happened at parties he attended. His memoir is appealing because of his honesty, and forthrightness. When writing about Evangelical Christians, he never takes on a condescending tone. He shows where his own questions led him, even as he shows how his parents saw things very differently than he did. His style is clear and lively, and he makes readers see how the questioning of his faith began, and how it grew. Readers will want to spend time with Hartzler to find out how he became true to himself and what choices he made on that journey.-Geri Diorio, Ridgefield Library, CTα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

Jesus is coming back. That’s what Aaron’s family believes, and as a boy, so does he. But by the end of this memoir, Aaron isn’t sure of much, other than he wants the freedom to be himself. Heartfelt and humorous, this book introduces Aaron; his strict but devoted parents; his grandmother, whose love is unconditional; and the classmates at his Christian schools, instrumental in shaping him. Hartzler writes with a keen eye for detail, whether it’s the early scene in which his grandfather crochets (while he makes pot holders) or the description of what it feels like to make out with a girl for the first time. He is equally sure-footed describing his inner turmoil as he does the opposite of what’s expected of him, all while maintaining the good-boy facade. One of the best things, however, is how lovingly Hartzler portrays his parents, even as they anger him. Aaron’s attraction to other boys is hinted at, but one has to read the acknowledgments to find out more. Readers will hope for a sequel to learn how his family dealt with the news of his sexuality. Grades 8-12. --Ilene Cooper

Aaron Hartzler grew up in an extremely conservative Christian family that did not have a tv, go to movies or listen to music. Even contemporary Christian rock because "you can't mix God's words with the Devil's beat." However, as he gets older he begins to question these beliefs. He begins to love rock music because it makes him feel happy and he can't understand how that can be a sin. Aaron participates in church services, teaches Good News children's group, acts in his Christian private school 's elaborately staged dramas all the while questioning the logic of his parents' strongest held beliefs, but ultimately finding his own way to peace and understanding with his family. All this is presented in a humorous (I can't count how many times I laughed out loud.) and sincere way to become one of the best memoir of "finding religion" that I have ever read.I also grew up in a religious Christian family and though my parents, thankfully, weren't so strict, I have often come into contact with people who believe in the ways of Aaron's parents and school administration. I could so identify with Aaron because his reaction to so much of what he saw in his life was my reaction. I often felt I was reading a more articulate version of my experience. The book is extremely well written for someone who doesn't have a background in writing (He's an actor and musician), but he manages to express so much of what I felt as a teenager in an engaging and intelligent way. I had and to this day, have many of the same questions that Aaron grappled with: if God knows every decision we will make before we are born, then why give us free will, if Jesus turned water to wine, then why is it not allowed to drink a glass of wine, how can a serial killer who asks for salvation days before execution make it into heaven while a good person in the jungles of Africa who didn't have the luck to hear about the Gospel won't make it into heaven to name a few. Aaron didn't really have anyone to whom he could turn to ask questions. Aaron, today an out homosexual as far as I have been able to understand in the book's press, grapples with sexual identity, although that is more or less only hinted at in this book. I get the feeling that that will be the subject of a sequel to this book. I would be very interested in reading this story and how his family accepted this.I would recommend this book to teens and adults alike, religious and non-religious because it is such a well written journey of faith. Even though Aaron ultimately rejects his parents' version of Christianity, he is never bitter or derisive.

Contrary to the blurb on the cover, this has nothing to do with "growing up gay." The author is firmly heterosexual throughout the book (which takes him as far as college). I kept waiting for him to discover his gay sexuality, but no luck, other than his occasional expressions of curiosity and admiration for well-muscled young men. It's quite well written, and gives a good description of life in a cult so extreme that movies and TV are forbidden and Christian rock is looked on as a tool of Satan. The high (or low) point in the book comes when the father beats his son and then asks forgiveness: not for the beating but for the sin of anger. And he invites the son to beat him in return! I'll draw the curtain of modesty on this scene. At the end of the book the young man is cheerfully headed off to Bible college. In a brief postscript he talks about having rejected his abusive family and crazy religion, but this was apparently only years later.

This book is a revelation for me. I mean, I saw myself in these pages, I relived parts of my own childhood between these lines. So much of it was familiar to me to such a high degree that I would cringe, or smile, as the memories rose up all around me. I couldn't help but compare my life to Aaron's, my family to his, because I can't escape the feeling that I've lived this life. Not exactly, sure, but he gave words to emotions and experiences I don't know if I could have ever described. And the impact I felt was so strong, the connection I made with this text was so real, I told people: if you ever want to know the CORE of my being, where I come from, and what made me, read this book.I am convinced the majority of conservative Christian public will not like this book much. For them, this book will read like a story of rebellion, a willing fall from grace, a continual practice of sin.For me, this was a story of comfort: finally, someone will talk about it. And now I know that there are others like me out there. I couldn't put it down; I couldn't stop reading. I can't remember the last time I devoured a book in 2 days. (Maybe Mockingjay?)Aaron Hartzler is the son of a preacher. He grew up in a (much) stricter home than I did, but many of the experiences I had were similar--my household had a ban on secular music, but I was generally allowed to go to movies; my parents felt that my talents are to be used (probably exclusively) for the glory of God and the work of being a missionary. As a consequence, this meant writing fiction, particularly contemporary romance as it existed in 90's and today -- which is my dream, just as Aaron's dream was to act, and not just in "biblical dramas" -- would be a big NO-NO, as my mother called it "pornography in print." But still, I relate to his experience. Especially to the discipline, at times harsh, but always intended to be loving, and to the constant stream of Scripture that flowed from the mouths of both his parents and mine. There are other theological differences between our upbringings, but on the whole, there was nothing too far-fetched/absurd/beyond the scope of imagination in this book that I had difficulty comprehending (which I think some might simply just write off as "crazy".)Aaron's experience, even to me, is extreme. I think he handled the entire tale with love, care, and respect, and the memoir is beautifully, achingly written from the point of view of a teenager coming to a crossroads. It is a coming-of-age story, and a spiritual journey in a sense--the story of a boy who finds oneself amid the many things we were taught to believe and the heavy expectations placed upon him by his ultra-conservative Christian parents. He struggles with the conflicting emotions of wanting to please his parents and wanting to be his own man. And the tension that builds steadily due to the delicate balancing act of trying to reconcile the two people he feels he needs to be is layered well throughout the book. Kudos to Aaron for having the courage to tell it.I feel like I understand myself more after reading this book. I know it wasn't self-help and it wasn't meant to be therapeutic for me, but in a way it was. I found myself seeking out answers about how he reconciled the two parts of himself, but that wasn't really what this book was about. It was mostly about becoming one's own person, a journey I can appreciate.I look forward to any sequels!

Amazon.com Review

Reading about the ins and outs of baking the perfect, flaky pie crust is a little like reading about how to achieve the perfect golf swing: the proof is in the doing. And it often takes a remarkably intuitive reader to understand exactly what the author is getting at. Not so the work of Rose Levy Beranbaum, the author who gave us The Cake Bible. If ever there was a cookbook author who could place her hands on top of yours, putting you through the proper motions, helping you arrive at just the right touch, Beranbaum is the one. The Pie and Pastry Bible begins with the crust. The author confesses right up front that 21 years ago, when she first began her quest for the perfect crust, "it was a complete mystery to me." She wasn't looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but something she could consistently turn out at a moment's notice. The ideal pie crust, she writes, "has light, flaky layers, but also ... is tender, and nicely browned, with a flavor good enough to eat by itself." In a book that stretches to about 700 pages long, her favorite pie crust is the first recipe: Perfect Flaky and Tender Cream Cheese Pie Crust. Typically, Beranbaum lists the ingredients by measure and weight for three separate sizes of pies, then gives instructions for the food processor or by hand. After 70 pages of pie crusts, tart crusts, and crumb pie crusts of every imaginable make and combination, Beranbaum starts with fruit pies. Her first (of many) detailed charts shows exactly what her ratios are of fruit to sugar to cornstarch. Then each recipe (start with The Best All American Apple Pie) includes pointers for success as well as several variations on the theme. Under the headline "Understanding," Beranbaum goes that extra mile by taking the trouble to explain just why something works the way it does. If you are only going to own one cookbook for pie and pastry recipes of every imaginable stripe and combination, you can't go wrong with this one. It's the Bible, after all. --Schuyler Ingle

From Publishers Weekly

Precision is the trademark style of Los Angeles Times-syndicated food columnist Berenbaum, a baking and chocolate industry consultant and author (The Cake Bible) who demystifies the art (and science) of pie and pastry making. Exacting instructions in this compendium of sweet and savory "how-tos" (achieve the flakiest pie crust, shape and bake croissants, apply decorative techniques, etc.) may open new doors for daunted home bakers and dessert dabblers, while offering serious amateurs an additional resource for creative inspiration. Recipe ingredients are given in both volume and weight (ounces and grams). Pies and tarts include sweet (e.g., Fig Tart with Mascarpone Cream) and savory (e.g., Deep Dish Chicken Pot Pies; Roasted Red Pepper and Poblano Quiche). The pastry section includes classic French puff pastry, Danish pastry, phyllo and strudel doughs among others. End chapters cover fundamentals like techniques (decorating, measuring ingredients), ingredients (often with stated brand preferences) and appropriate equipment (mixers, tart pans, etc.). Accompanying sections to recipesA"Pointers for Success" and "Understanding" (notes on food chemistry)Aclearly detail the scientific underpinnings of the baking process. Indeed a "bible" for novices and serious amateurs alike, this time-tested encyclopedic tome distills Berenbaum's 21 years dedicated to the pastry arts in a clearly written, thoroughly documented manual. I purchased this book 15-20 years ago. I'm a home cook, but pies and tarts are my favorite: I'm always the one who brings the showstopper pie or tart wherever I go. Once I started using Rose's recipes, I started getting rave reviews from virtually everyone who tasted my pies. I call Rose (whom I don't know, but wish I did) The Goddess. She is meticulous. Her recipes are creative: for example, her Blueberry Tart, which is one of my "blue-ribbon" standbys, has a genius method of ensuring that the blueberry filling is not just blueberry "jam," but actually has whole, beautiful blueberries. Her recipes are also infallible: if you do exactly what she says, you will not fail. Very important: you MUST buy the hardcover! Otherwise her recipes will drive you crazy because you'll find the filling recipe here, the dough recipe there (or perhaps there), the instructions for blind-baking elsewhere, and her tips for using tart shells on yet another page. This is not a criticism: Rose is so meticulous with her recipes that she can't possibly repeat her detailed instructions in every recipe. I photocopy the pages I need, then arrange them in a logical sequence, sometimes literally cutting and pasting them. I've done this for the recipes I make over and over such as "Open-faced fresh blueberry pie," "Pecan pie," and "Fresh strawberry and rhubarb tart," all of which I make as tarts, I finally wrote this review because I just wrote a 2-star for another pie book, in which I mentioned PPB. I thought, "it's time I raved about this on amazon!" I'm retired, cooking is my thing, I read cookbooks like novels, and I always change something about every recipe I read. Not Rose. Her recipes are perfect. Photo: my blueberry tart prepared for transport: Rose's recipe + pastry cutouts on top representing blueberries and their leaves.

I purchased a few books from Mrs. Beranbaum, in order to prepare something special this past Holiday Season. I am a beginner baker with a passion to learn. At first it seemed a bit confusing with all the measurements and jumping around from one section to another, but after taking the time to read and to absorb the information I found that I understood the recipes and format much better. This is not your simple and typical cookbook. This is a book for baking which is more involved and loaded with tips and I found this book to be educational. The real proof is in the pudding, so I made 3 pies from two of Mrs. Beranbaum's cookbooks, The Baking Bible and The Pie and Pastry Bible. I made three different crusts one for each apple, cherry, and pumpkin pies. Let's just say that my family was very impressed! The pies turned out perfect all three times and were very delicious! I'm kinda proud and pleased that my first ever pies, from scratch, looked and tasted great!Though I have much to learn and I do need more practice on the are of pie making, I found that this book is money well spent. Thank you Mrs. Rosse Levy Beranbaum! I love your books!

This book is better than I expected. It is a complete guide. The contents include:-Crusts-Fruit Pies-Chiffon Pies-Meringue Pies and Tarts-Custard Pies and Tarts-Ice cream Pies and Ice Cream (!!!!)-Tarts and tartlets-Savory Tarts and Pies and Quiche-Biscuits and Scones-Fillo-Strudel-Puff Pastry and Croissant-Danish Pastry-Brioche-Cream Puff Pastry-Fillings, toppings-Sauces, glazesIt also includes extra information with basic pastry weights and measures, techniques, ingredients and equipment. And a valuable plus from this book is that it is easy to understand even though it has few pictures, but it has enough information and tips on every recipe.

The recipes are awesome! Rose Levy Beranbaum is my all time favorite cookbook author for the clarity she brings to measurements & techniques. However, I'm a visual person and illustrations mean a lot to me. The digital edition of the book doesn't include the illustrations. If I didn't rely on illustrations, I'd give this 5 stars.

I really liked Rose's The Cake Bible so I decided to buy The Pastry Bible. I loved this book. Beautiful homey pies, nice instructions and no fail recipes. I think her apple pies are the best I've made and her pie crusts are superb. This book is one of those books that I write on and wear of quickly because of constant use. I always leave it in the kitchen. Recommend it to any cook who enjoys baking and looks to better his or her pie repertoire.

One of the best pie and pastry reference books out there. It tells you how to make something as well as explains why something does or does not work. "The Cake Bible" is her other great reference book on baking.

I was thrilled to read this book's opening chapter and decided I had to have my own copy. I'm a very experienced pie baker, so unlike her tale, I have a tried and true recipe that has never failed in the art of pie making. But my recipe was getting a bit old after almost 45 years, so I wanted to try new things. I also don't have her depth or insights and wanted to learn more. It does not disappoint to give you details and for that it is a great resource. I decided to try her flaky cream cheese pie pastry recipe first. This is why I did not give it 5 stars. It is tedious, time consuming, and a rather disappointing crust after all that work. I made the nectarine-raspberry pie and also had a failure in the sauce made from the juices. It turned to tar in the microwave at the time specified on the recipe. However, there are many failures that may mean future successes, as Rose Beranbaum was so eager to learn. I hope I can continue to be inspired...there are definitely many more possibilities to master.

This book was absolutely amazing!I took about a year of accounting courses in college, but never quite learned the intricacies of financial statement analysis. I wanted to learn not only about corporate finance, but also how to analyze financial statements. Thus, my search was on.After researching book stores and reading forums online, I learned about this book, which I looked up on Amazon.com. I love books that get straight to the point, so when I saw that this book covered corporate financial management and financial statement analysis in under 300 pages, I was in!I purchased the book from Amazon and I read it in about two weeks. I literally could not put it down. The authors speak like human beings and actually make math and finance fun and interesting. In those two weeks alone, I not gained a better understanding of accounting, but I learned how to evaluate investments and make management decisions based on company finances. The book covers income statement analysis, balance sheet analysis, cash flow statement analysis, performance ratios, a bit of inventory management (like a financial intro to lean), and advanced capital expenditure analysis through concepts like discounted cash flow analysis. This book took me from feeling like I'd never understand certain things, to being able to discuss finance like an executive manager.I'm not kidding either, the book dives straight in and explains everything in a no nonsense approach.Financial Intelligence acted like a learning springboard for me by providing a foundation for me to read deeper into finance.I 100% recommend this book to anyone looking for a place to being their finance studies.

Although I have an extensive background in Finance, I chose to read this book to brush up my basics to progress in my career. To be honest, this book is one of the best investments I've made. It is one of the most simplified versions of understanding the core of any business i.e. its financial statements. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to either learn the financial side of business or simply re-touch with the basics in their free time. Very well written and excellent examples throughout each chapter make it very interesting and relatable in the real world.

I do have a few years (decades) of experience in the field - and many moons ago I completed most of the coursework for Ph.d. in accounting before deciding academia was not where I wanted to be. I taught the subject at the University level for more than 5 years and now train on this subject internationally. My background also includes working as an auditor and many years wearing the corporate controllers hat. I say this because I want to make clear that this book is not just for beginners, or people without a background in the field. I recommend this book to everyone. Accounting and finance are not easy subjects especially if you jump in and start with the technical aspects of it. Put simply the better you understand the numbers - the better your business decisions will be. I view this book as providing an excellent foundation - the more you build your core knowledge of the subject the better. Remember the key in business is making better business decisions - don't be overly impressed by people who can spout GAAP at you with in terms you don't understand. The real experts can, and should, be able to translate the rules in a fashion that aids in understanding (1) why the rule is there in the first place, and (2) how it impacts you business and the decisions it makes. This book is written in a fashion that will not put even non-accountants to sleep and it paints enough pictures with examples of accounting misdeeds to keep it interesting - and to really drive home how seemingly innocuous (in some cases) changes to how transactions are recorded and paint a very different picture of the health of an organization. If you are in business / work - do yourself, your future and your business a favor by increasing your understanding of the numbers. This book is a great place to start....

Great book to introduce you to the key concepts of finance, as they apply to every person in a company. If you're working in finance, you likely already know this information, but if you're in any other department, it is the perfect book. Easy to read, easy to understand, and I have been able to apply the ideas right away. I wish this was the introductory text in MBA programs - great place to start, as finance is, more than anything, a language. I am in sales and found the ideas a great reminder of how to position the financial value of by products. I encourage anyone who wants to get ahead in their job to read this, and then think about your company and how to apply the ideas. In this day and age, financial intelligence is critical to getting ahead!

Very good book! If you have no financial experience in your company and want to get there, this will help tremendously. I listen while I drive and then read in the rare slow moments of life. The way they lay it out helps non-financial management get a much clearer picture of what a business should and shouldn't be doing with their numbers.
