Well written spooky stories inspired by folklore from around the world. I loved that I hadn't heard of most of the tales she based the stories on. It was a quick read but very entertaining. If you like the book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, you'll like this.

It was a short but entertaining collection of legends and stories handed down through time about villainous women. Some of the tales are humorous while others leave you haunted. Well worth time.

light read for goth fans or anyone who enjoys a twisted ending. I would enjoy a second helping of this book.

Beautifully written and told, these stories based on traditional folklore give readers old and young a world that feels both fantastic and familiar!

The stories weren't really scary. I realize they were fiction stories but I've read other fiction scary stories and they gave me the chills.

Passion and Poison is a serviceable collection of seven stories all featuring women and various supernatural elements. These stories are meant to be read aloud, and while the author does a great job with some classic folklore elements in these re-tellings, the stories themselves just don't hold much drama or suspense when you sit down to read them yourself. They are very short, with some featuring women who have been wronged and must seek vengeance, one featuring a grief stricken woman who obtains a second chance at motherhood, and another celebrating a woman who has an uncommon gift for dealing with the unexpected. They seem geared toward a young audience, but I can't imagine the various subject matters having much appeal. This collection is somewhat redeemed for me by one selection entitled "The Severed Hand". This story achieved what I was expecting from this collection. It was not surprising to read in the author's statement at the end that this one was the closest to the traditional of any story in the collection. It was the only one I found that was able to generate any sort of genuine horror filled atmosphere and would be an excellent choice for any middle school audience.Passion and Poison barely squeaks into the three star category because I felt that the author was successful in generating stories with a fine read aloud flow and genuine folklore appeal. "The Severed Hand" is the only one I might use for groups, but I think the others might find a hard time finding the right audience. The artwork was just okay, but all in all I just didn't feel very passionate about Passion and Poison. It was just okay.

In eight short stories written to thrill and haunt, Janice M. Del Negro introduces readers to women who confront ghosts, murderers, and the supernatural. In one tale, a beautiful widow sets out to accomplish an impossible task in order to marry the man of her choice. In another, a young woman must avenge the murder of her sister while avoiding becoming a victim herself. Most of the stories are based on classic folktales from America and Europe, but the tales have been updated and the perspective shifted to give personality and prominence to the female protagonists, who often went nameless in the original version. The text is accompanied by black and white illustrations. As I read this book, I was somewhat reminded of the old Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books that I enjoyed so much back in elementary school. The books in that series, like "Passion and Poison", were collections of short stories accompanied by black and white illustrations. The drawings that accompanied "Scary Stories" were terrifying; two decades later, they still give me the willies. The stories themselves were often silly or based on urban legends, but all the kids I knew enjoyed them and got freaked out by the illustrations. In "Passion and Poison", the strength of the stories comes from the text itself. These tales are made to be read out loud - from the first sentence, each story slips into an easy storyteller mode that builds atmosphere and heightens the suspense. Most of the stories are set in a vague historic America that could fall in the 19th or early 20th century - pretty much at any point pre-electricity, when everything depended on candlelight. Location is also unspecific - one story has a decidedly Western flavor, while another seems more likely to happen somewhere in New England, and a third is almost certainly somewhere in the South. The author's note at the back of the book explains the origins of many of the stories, if you're curious. Now, is this a book that will send chills down your spine and make you jump? Probably not. If you've ever read a compilation of American folklore or European fairy tales, you'll recognize the stories and know the outcome right away. But the stories are told well, and to a younger audience not yet familiar with the material they'll be quite enjoyable. The black and white illustrations definitely can't match the creep factor of "Scary Stories". They're pretty and atmospheric rather than frightening. But I'm glad they're included - there's a softness to the pencil sketches that's really quite lovely.

Food Fight is about the inside story of the food industry, America's Obesity Crisis, and what we can do about it. It is a very interesting read. But it does take a while to get through. Or it did for me. It's not a book you are just going to sit down and read from cover to cover. It's one you are going to read a little at a time as it is a very long, fact filled book.If you have ever wondered how the food industry markets their products, you will find this very interesting. Food Fight gets into the studies that have been done and the processes the food industry goes through to attracts its target audience. Mostly this book focuses on children as the target audience. Both through tv and product packaging. Food Fight also shows what can be done to put a halt to children being the target of unhealthy foods as well as what can be done to get healthier foods into the schools. This is a very good book. It would be very good for someone to read who is in a place of power to be able to implement the actions that are talked about in this book. Just be prepared for a long read. Because this book really is. But I did find it to be very informative. And it gave me lots of ideas on food health that I can practice in my own home.

Dr. Kelly Brownell has spent much of his career fighting the food industry's attempts to make us all fat. He brings a crusader's passion and a scientist's accuracy and thoroughness to "Food Fight". He and co-author Katherine Horgen see obesity as a public health crisis like smoking or drunk driving. They take the social movement against smoking as a model and call on us all to get involved, for our own sake and our children's.This book is extremely well-referenced, drawing on scientific articles, popular journalism and books like Fast Food Nation. Brownell and Horgen reveal the huge scope of America's problem with weight and tell how the problem is spreading all over the world. They show how the food industry has penetrated schools, government agencies, and entertainment media to market sugary, fatty foods to adults and children.Brownell is especially concerned about children, who lack the power to defend themselves against food advertising and easily available sweets. He demolishes the "personal responsibility" argument used by the calorie pushers. How can children be expected to say "no" to food that tastes good, is readily available in their schools and communities, is recommended by their favorite media characters or sports stars, and which nobody is warning them against? The authors give dozens of suggestions for social changes that could increase physical activity (ex. bike paths), reduce soft drink consumption (ex a small tax that would go to fund nutrition education and provision of healthy school lunches), and make healthy food more available (a problem for a very large number of people in America.) They also have lots of good suggestions for political activism. What "Food Fight" does not include is strategies for individuals and families to protect themselves and live healthier lives. That's not what the book is about - it's about the politics of food, and how we can change the environment so that healthy living becomes easier. The writing style is clear, although not especially entertaining. But there is some humor, such as a subheading on the huge size of restaurant portions: "Nelson, party of four: your muffin is ready."Food Fight is a political manifesto by a crusader who has already been attacked repeatedly by the food industry. He makes a strong case, one I will use in my upcoming book, "The Politics of Diabetes." I encourage readers to support Dr. Brownell and Horgen's cause.David Spero RN, author of The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Illness (Hunter House 2002) [...]

Excellent. Academically of a very high standard. Compulsive reading.

If only more people were concerned with what we are putting in our bodies and who is in control of it!

As expected

This is more of a practical manual on how to get some change done than a page turner meant for entertainment. I laud the authors for this, but for those of us who don't have time to get out and become community organizers, I think other books offer the same expose.

After reading Kelly Brownell's factual, rational and well-balanced book about the food industry and the American obesity crisis, I came away with the realization that basically the food industry is determined to turn all of us into foie gras. As Brownell, Director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders, and co-author Katherine Horgen methodically demonstrate, the now global epidemic of obesity is anything but a lonely individual battle against overeating. Instead, we are victims of a host of factors that tip the scales dramatically against all of us: supersizing, saturation advertising from infancy on, aggressive lobbying, fast food and sugar-laden soft drinks in schools, the high cost and difficulty of finding healthy foods, plus all the factors that keep us sitting passively rather than exercising. It's a public health problem of enormous size, and as Brownell and Horgen consistently point out, it requires a political and environmental solution. While the authors back up their argument with authoritative research, statistics and analysis, I was most struck by some of the details they reported: baby bottles with soft-drink logos, Ronald McDonald's 100% recognition rate among American children, the 70% of eight-year-olds who rate fast foods as healthier than home cooking, the fact that feeding a family with healthy food costs 50% more than with junk food, that many "servings" are up to seven times larger than those the USDA statistics on fat, carbohydrates and calories are based on, and, as has been widely reported, the projection that the current generation of overfed, under-exercised, diabetes-and-heart-disease-prone children may be the first in recent history to live shorter lives than their parents and grandparents. We Americans are used to tackling challenges and problems individually. In many cases, that's a great quality. But when an entire generation is being supersized, with enormous impacts on health and well-being, we need a different approach. Brownell and Horgen spend the last third of the book developing a coherent, thoughtful and much-needed societal approach to the obesity epidemic. If you want to understand why this public-health epidemic has burgeoned now, and what we as a society can do about it, _Food Fight_ is the place to start.Robert Adler, Ph.D., author of _Medical Firsts: From Hippocrates to the Human Genome (John Wiley & Sons, March 2004).
