If you are looking for an in-depth book on Frank and Jesse James, this may not be the best buy for you. However, if you are seeking information about the Northfield Raid or (like me) have little knowledge about the James brothers and just want to find a good book, you can't go wrong with this one!The book is well researched, full of interesting facts and tidbits of how and why this robbery came about, who was involved, and what happened to everyone along the way. Definitely not a dry history story, it was a tale I found I couldn't put down, and finished it in just a few sittings. The pictures and illustrations are not just for decoration; many of them help to form an accurate picture of what Northfield looked like back when the James-Younger Gang decided to rob its bank.I am definitely glad I found this book.

Shot All to Hell: Jesse James: the Northfield Raid and the Wild West’s Greatest Escape by Mark Lee GardnerThis historical novel attempts to pierce the veil of silence and misleading statements around the James/Younger Gang’s botched bank robbery in Northfield, Minnesota. Cole Younger swore in writing that Frank and Jesse James were not even in Northfield, but he proceeded to name the two by their aliases at the time. Speculation over who actually shot the brave bank cashier Joseph Lee Heywood has been argued for years. The James/Younger gang started as raiders in the Confederate Army under William C. Quantrill. Some were known to be involved in Quantrill’s vicious raid on Lawrence, Kansas that left between 150 and 200 men and boys murdered. Others were involved in the Centralia Massacre of 22 Union Soldiers. After the war, the North pillaged the South. Under the hastily voted in new Missouri State Constitution’s Ironclad Oath act, former Confederates could not vote, do jury duty, advance in business deals, or even preach in the pulpit. Under such restrictions, many people fought back. The James/Younger boys turned to crime. They reasoned that the money in banks was that of their Northern oppressors, and they were still at war.The Pinkerton’s made a disastrous raid on the James family farm. Thinking Jesse and Frank were there, they tossed in a fire bomb. Although the James boys’ stepdad put the fire out easily and tossed the shell in the fireplace, it unexpectedly exploded. The blast maimed the boy’s mother and killed their 8 year old half brother. The Pinkerton’s also killed John Younger, the brother of Cole, Jim, and Bob.The gang had great success with their robbery until a town called Northfield in Minnesota. And this book tells all.One note: I always found it odd that the James/Younger gang was considered Wild West. All of them were from Missouri. Their bank robberies were mostly north and east from that point. They even pulled a robbery in West Virginia. Jesse and Frank James lived in Nashville for a time, and Jesse’s son Jesse was born in Nashville! The book is a page turner for all that like true crime, the Wild West, and history in general. I give the book five stars!Quoth the Raven…

After seeing Mr. Gardner on numerous history shows on TV, I decided to order "Shot All to Hell" to see if I liked his writing style as much as I like his comments on the shows that I'd watched. After blasting through this book in short order, my answer is an emphatic "YES!!!". There's a whole lot to like about this book. First, and very importantly to me, Mr. Gardner is meticulous in his research. I mean SERIOUSLY meticulous. His acknowledgments, notes, and resources - which I find very interesting in their own right - take up over 50 pages at the back of the book . Second, he has the rare gift of being able to pack all of that research into a tight, seamless story that truly reads like a novel. No dry, droning history teacher here - this is vibrant, engrossing stuff. In addition to his inclusion of the well-known and well-published historical facts of the James Gang in general, and the Northfield Raid in particular, Mr. Gardner really brought this story to life for me with his use of eyewitness accounts and contemporary newspaper reports. This approach to historical non-fiction writing has appealed to me ever since I first read Miller and Snell's "Great Gunfighters of the Kansas Cowtowns" about 30 years ago - and "Shot All to Hell" will certainly take a place alongside that great work in my home library.

I am writing this with my five year old granddaughter, who loves this book and is so excited to write her first review. She loves the part where Mrs. Primm, the mother, opens the bathroom door and discovers Lyle. We live in NYC, near houses that look just like Lyle's. So we went over to look at the houses and pretended we heard Lyle. We love this book so much that we plan to read other Lyle books. Yay!

It is empty now, but it won't be for long.... So begins this wonderful book which is a wonderful introduction to the Lyle, Lyle Crocodile Universe. In this book, Mr. and Mrs. Primm and their son, Joshua move into a new apartment on E. 88th Street in NYC. While they are unloading their belongings, they hear sounds that go SWISH! SWASH! SPLASH! SWOOSH! They wonder what it is, and when Mrs. Primm goes to the bathroom to wash her hands before lunch. She spots a crocodile in the tub! She points it out to her husband. They go to call 911 just to find out that the line isn't connected yet. Fortunately a young actor delivers them a note telling them that the crocodile is friendly, but that the only food he'll eat is Turkish Caviar. Whatever will they do with him? Find out now for yourself.

I love this story and intend on buying all of the books in the series! A bit too involved forMy four year old but i love it!

One of my favorite books as a child, and now I get to share it with my son.

grandkids like it

Wonderful story, loved the drawings, did not know this book or author before. Good surprise

A classic. My 3 & 5 yr old grandsons loved it.

The publication date says 1973 but it was written during the 1940s or 50's I would say. Not too many homes still had hand-me down Victorian furniture in 1973! ha! I received this book myself when I was in early elementary school (1964-1965) and loved it. I will now go on the search around the house for it to pass onto my granddaughter. Lyle will bring a smile to anyone's face and kids will love the idea of having a pet crocodile in the bathtub!
