I honestly had to check and see if this was actually meant as a 'young adult' light reading book - it seems to be about that level to me. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but it came nowhere near to meeting what I thought I was getting. I would say this book is about 70% a brief overview of general aviation history up to about 1945 with somewhat random focus, 25% random tidbits of bibliography on various test pilots and about 5 pages that actually talk about the X1 and breaking the sound barrier.I'd call it a good book for a teen interested in aviation, but it's a disappointment for a reasonably knowledgeable aviation enthusiast, history buff or anyone who knows more than the basic history of fighters Wikipedia article.

In the process of getting to the essence of this history, the author provides the reason why the US lost the lead in aircraft development after the Wright Brothers had the first flight, the real reason for the Great Depression, a quick review of the Second World War and other topics. All of this resulted in a lot of interesting tidbits of information, but at times, I wondered what this book was about. In the last section, he got to the topic at hand - breaking the sound barrier or "chasing the demon" as the title notes. The demon refers to the fear that an airplane couldn't pass the speed of sound with the survival of the pilot. Two planes, and two separate pilots accomplished this very close to each other, the X-1 Bell Rocket plane and the XP86, Sabre jet. Although there is some question about who did it first, the official statement is that the X-1 Bell Rocket plane accomplished it flown by Chuck Yeager. The plane can be seen in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. This book is also a testimony to the "test pilot". The individuals who flew these experimental aircraft for the first time. Many of them died in the process of testing these prototype aircraft. As the author states, the only way to determine whether a plane works the way it was designed and how well it works was to get into the cockpit and fly it. That took a lot of courage. I hope the author continues with further books on these great men. All the book was interesting, but the last section makes the book worth the read for anyone interested in US History.

Well written book, as all of his are. I was very disappointed with the book because there was only one real chapter about breaking the sound barrier. The background of each of the people was great, but there just wasn't much substance to back up the title of the book. I will still read his next book.

As other reviewers have noted, despite the book's claim, this is not about the breaking of the sound barrier. This is an interesting but rather light account of the history of aviation from the late 19th Century to World War 2.Unlike some of the other reviewers who expressed disappointment with this book, I don't have any training in aviation or engineering but I still found it to be pretty shallow on descriptions and explanations. I did, however, have a friend of my father's who'd been an engineer who'd worked on this very project as well as going on to work for NASA for the Apollo project who'd personally worked with Chuck Yeager and told me stories about him when I was a kid. Based on what I remember from those, the author of this book appears to have a rather heavy bias against Yeager.

This book has one chapter on breaking the sound barrier and 200 pages of WWII history about some of the pilots engaged in flight testing. As another reviewer said, perhaps I had inflated expectations since I have 40 years experience as an aeronautical engineer and know a fair amount on this subject. This book seemed to be written more as a justification why George Welch should be credited with breaking the sound barrier rather than Chuck Yeager. This book was not about the demon that lives at Mach 1 in the sky.

Chasing the Demon.A story of the quest to break the sound barrier. I do not know how many histories of that quest I have read, nor do I know how many histories of flight I have read. But I’ve read a boatload of both. Each new history contains a few things I never knew, forgot and was happy to be reminded, and castigates something I’d taken as gospel.Chasing the Demon has some of the first, a fair amount of the second, a weensy bit of the third, but I read it from front to back as if were the first time.Fine book.

Dan Hampton has delivered another great effort. His research is very extensive and his personal knowledge as a pilot shines through. Writing style is engaging and he delves into the topic at the right level. I wish more writers would take his lead. A few errors in information and typos, but this is the first edition so no harm/no foul.

I purchased Chasing the Demon as a Christmas Present for a brother under the condition that I could read it after he was finished with it. What little I did see of the book before it was wrapped was a terrific read. Very anxious to get to read the entire book.

This is a text by a master of the subject matter. Awesome!!

Respect and devotion,Is not a book,It's a life lesson,A Journey with lightA real realised Adept gift

Swami Veda Bharati is one of the top living experts on the Yoga Sutras and Sanskrit texts in general. Traditional commentary has to answer the comments of all previous commentators, clear back to the original; so while devoting so many pages to a single pada may seem ponderous to some, the discerning reader will take what s/he wishes while appreciating the scholarship that went into the book. The publisher was unfortunately a bit careless with spellcheck, but the work stands out nonetheless.

50 year old book but great reference and inexpensive.

Not a very informative book. It doesn't not give enough information in the chapters to help you answer the questions at the end of each chapter. Also, the author references several (a lot) equations from previous chapter rather than just rewriting them. It makes the book difficult to follow because you have to keep flipping pages to previous chapters for the referenced equations.

I've come to acquire a taste for statistical mechanics. The first several times I ran across Gregory wannier's "Statistical Physics" I was very much unimpressed and put off by it, despite its treatment of topics of special interest to me. Now, having completed much of Donald McQuarrie's "Statistical Mechanics" and much of David Goodstein's "States of Matter", I am finding to my utter amazement that Wannier's book is *really* good and complements the other two (superb) texts quite well.Perhaps this is just a matter of acquiring taste for his approach, but equally likely it's a matter of having read McQuarrie and then Goodstein first, and in that order. With that experience under my belt, "Statistical Physics" has shined with lucidity and simplicity, and it's been a real joy to read.Part of this may be due to the nature of statistical physics. To begin with, it is not a subject oriented around being able to produce quick numerical results- that is, statistical physics is not just back-of-the-envelope calculation. Instead, a leisurely conceptual approach gives more insight into its deep and intricate structure, and all three books mentioned here provide that and convey an appreciation of this beautiful subject. The wise reader will read it at his own unhurried pace.Wannier classifies the chapters and sections of "Statistical Physics" into three types appropriate to the solid undergraduate, graduate and advanced graduate/post doc levels. So it may not work well as an introduction to the material at any of the levels.Wannier has the honesty to treat the second law of thermodynamics as a useful but unproven principle as opposed to dogma, and devotes three complementary chapters to it on its statistical justification, its classical, axiomatic justification and its applications.I also like the more generalized treatment which includes a nonequilibrium model in kinetic theory in addition to the usual treatment restricted to the equilibrium case. Most of the mathematics occurs in the context of profuse prose, so only rarely is the reader left with too much mathematics connected by too few words. The writing is almost always clear.I highly recommend the book to those with sufficient background, time and inclination to reap the great rewards it offers. P.S. If you still don't like Wannier's book, you might do well to look at it again in a few years when you have the experience given by reading other books.Prerequisites: courses in thermodynamics, classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and an introductory course in statistical mechanics, statistical physics or statistical thermodynamics

I was looking for something beyond an undergraduate treatment when I came upon this book, and thought that for ... dollars, it was a good deal. The table of contents is really impressive, but reading the book is a horror. If you've taught a course in statistical mechanics, it is probably okay as a reference, but otherwise stay away!
