Redfern offers an alternative explanation as to what happened near Roswell, NM in 1947. Is he right? Hard to say. His story is pieced together from interviews from some anonymous sources that, while he did verify some of their facts, leave one wondering if he wasn't fed some of this information for other reasons.I don't believe in spoilers but the gist of the book is that it wasn't aliens that crashed in Roswell but a very human, albeit nefarious, military experiment. The years of resulting alien controversy is simply a cover-up to mask the atrocities conducted by the US government. Nick lays the story out in detail but, as always in a case like this, there's room for doubt.I like the book. I like the ideas presented and I love Redfern's style. I think too many years have passed for us to ever really know what happened in 1947 for sure; too many years of deception. Nick Redfern presents an interesting theory and will follow it up with a new book soon. We'll have to see what new evidence is presented then.

First of all, a disclaimer: I'm something of a fan of Mr. Redfern's work. I think he's fun to read, and he must be a brave man to go monster-hunting in creepy places all over the planet. Besides this book, I've read "Keep Out," "Three Men in Search of Monsters," "The NASA Conspiracies," and "Strange Secrets."I understand why the other reviewers criticized his use of unnamed sources: "the Colonel," and "the Black Widow." But from my experience as a newspaper report for a number of years, sometimes a promise of confidentiality is the only way to get a source to share information. And Mr. Redfern works hard to corroborate the secret sources. He has done a massive amount of research into the Roswell Incident, and although it's controversial, his theory about American use of human test subjects in nuclear research needs to be part of that extended conversationI do wonder, however, how any policy-maker, civilian or military, could in in the shadow of World War II and of Nazi atrocities, order human tests while the Nuremberg war-crime trials were filling the headlines. It seems like the risks would have far outweighed the benefits.One of my favorite chapters is Chapter 14, "The Crashed UFOs that Never Were." Mr. Redfern details a number of U.S. government operations to spread bogus UFO reports to confuse the Soviets, or to distract public attention from U.S. weapons research. This part of the book relies little on confidential courses and seems to be taken mostly from declassified public-domain materials.Please note. this is a serious book, unlike some of Mr. Redfern's monster-hunting volumes, which contain a considerable amount of humor. So, in summary, I enjoyed "Body-snatchers" cover to cover. even though I'm not 100 percent convinced.

The book answers the question: Why would the military want to keep the UFO story alive?Nick Redfern does a great job of recapping the history of the famed Roswell UFO crash of July 1947, reviewing the documentary evidence and leading theories, and then quickly moving into what he believes to be the most plausible explanation. This was not a theory he came up with on his own, but was suggested to him by several sources who approached him after various speaking engagements.Redfern sets the events in the context of the post-war military experiments being carried out at the time. And the rush to complete cruel and unethical medical tests before the outrage created by the Nuremburg trials could shut them down.Thoroughly researched and well-documented, the book is interesting from beginning to end.

My Husband read this book, he is usually not a reader, but couldn't put this book down. We visited Roswell three years ago my husband thought the book had some very good explanations of what DID happen at Roswell

I really struggled with this book. It was like listening to a symphony with on note playing over and over again. I appreciate the fact that I was getting a new look at the Roswell incident;however I just didn't need all the eternal proofs and I believe that Nick was trying too hard to convince himself, and this made for extremely boring reading.This would have played better as an article in. a magazine,rather than being dragged out into a full length book.Oh well even the best writers have a right to have a bad book once in a while.

I Am Still Alive is a thoroughly entertaining novel in a fascinating setting. The most interesting aspect, to me was seeing how Jess Cooper, the young protagonist, gradually matured in her thinking as she faced dire challenges. She was never a simpering weakling; indeed, she faced real challenges right from the beginning. But she grew in wisdom and perspective as she confronted each challenge. Her lowest moment was truly gruesome (and possibly not for the weak-stomached reader). It tested her resolve to live. The rewarding payoff was unexpected and satisfying. The book’s climax was a test of another kind for young Jess.Every person’s life has truly difficult times. This story is a lesson in surviving them. Jess Cooper reminds me a bit of True Grit’s Mattie Ross. They both suffer great loss and they both tackle the enormous burdens set before them with a single minded determination that allows for one of only two endings: success or death. Jess’s lessons: Think. Take it slow. Smart, not strong. Stay alive. These are the kind of heroes I want my granddaughters to know as they grow toward adulthood.I enjoyed this book very much and highly recommend it.

This book was recommended to me by my brother, the author's grandfather. That makes me her aunt and wanting to support her I bought the book and read it (maybe even felt a little obligated). I was a little hesitant as I don't usually read YA. You can tell we are a family of readers, so I feel that I am qualified to compare and critique. The bottom line, I am so glad I read it! I found it hard to put down. In the beginning I thought it was just another book about a kid from a divorced family ticked at her dad. I soon found out It was so much more than that. Kate kept the story at a constant, moving pace and easy to follow. After reading the Donner Party book not long ago, this book reminded me of the hardships faced when living in the wilderness without adequate skills or equipment. The main character is a 16 year old, physically challenged, out of her element and she survives. I think Jess displayed guts, hard work and a lot of soul searching. Good job!!

Loved this book. But then, I am Kate’s grandfather, so may be a little biased. But, not much. It is a great read.

I love survival stories, and have since I was a teen searching through the YA section for every one I could pick up. I AM STILL ALIVE is a wonderful addition to the genre, and I loved Jess. I loved her resourcefulness, her somber voice, but most of all how she coped with her injuries and weakness and acknowledged that there were things she couldn't do, was angry about that, and used her strengths to compensate for what she couldn't do physically. Plus, the story itself is harrowing, with all the great survival elements I always love. But mostly, thank God we get a badass girl who gets to survive through the elements. Definitely recommended!

I loved this book so much. I wanted the main character Jess to survive so badly that I kept reading about what she was going through every time I should have put the book down to do something in the "real" world. I just needed to know how Jess was going to get through the next near-death experience! The forest was out to kill her. So were the animals in it and the people her father had gotten involved with. She was totally isolated. Not like a hundred miles from anyone else, but HUNDREDS of miles away from anyone being able to save her. Every time she survived a horrible accident or encounter, I was sure (because this was what always seemed to happen) that she would soon be attacked by a grizzly or fall through ice on a frozen lake or get swarmed by bees. "I Am Still Alive" is an amazing story of endurance. It seemed realistic, too. Jess has no superpowers. She's just a person who has to decide every day if she wants to live and then make that happen. Her tale is gripping. So is this book.

We bought this book because it sounded interesting. That is an understatement of what we actually got. This book may have been written for the YA market, but we are over 60 and actually both loved this book. Not only was it very exciting, but really made you want her to succeed in overcoming every difficulty. Having spent many years in wilderness adventures ourselves, this book was very realistic as to the dangers and usual pitfalls of not being prepared for all nature can throw at you. Very believable. Hope she writes more books.

I usually enjoy YA books because they tend to cut to the chase for both plot and character, and this excellent book is no exception. An enthralling story of a teen's survival in the wilds of Canada which on its own would make a great book, but a number of suspenseful plot twists make this a real page-turner. A great read that made a long plane flight pass by very quickly and enjoyably. I will hope to see more from this author.

This is reviewed as a Young Adult book, but I'm a woman "of a certain age" and I loved it! Trying to survive is always a good plot, and there are too many books out there where nothing happens. The result: Superheroes and Vampires. This book shows that ordinary, flawed human beings can be inventive and heroic, too. The writing is plain and simple, journalist style, but that's OK. If you want poetry, read poetry.

He has also been an editor on multiple Emmy-nominated programs, including Intervention, Unsolved Mysteries, and Cops. Having devoured the hardcover version of the book, I bought the expanded paperback version with a bit of hesitation. How much more he possibly add to a book that seemed to contain every possible fact, detail and quote about Prince's studio work in 1983 and 1984. Well the answer to that is, this feels like an entirely new book.I should have been doing work over the weekend to prepare for our first rain since last spring, but nope, I was on the sofa with my headphones on all weekend reading the expanded version. I have a hunch that the guy who wrote this found that people whom had previously been wary of talking to him, were now pounding on his door wanting to tell their stories. Having read the hardcover they must have realized that this is not some quick cash grab book or one that is looking to sensationalize and reveal Prince's private life. Instead they found a scholarly work that will surely be the go to source for information for decades if not centuries to come. And they wanted their stories part of that history.There seem to be so many new great quotes that I stopped trying to compare it to the hardcover version. There is detail about songs that I had never even known the name of before, and I have known about songs that it seemed no one else knew about for decades.The amount of additional work put into this addition is massively obvious. It also corrects some assumptions or honest mistakes from the hardcover as new information from new interviews has provided more insight. One has to admire an author willing to note and correct even the most minor errors. This appears to be his desire: to make sure that the true history of how Prince created his music is preserved.This book, like the hardback, in a lesser authors hands could have been a very cold, dry set of facts, but that is not the case here. There is a story, based on all the hundreds of sources and facts and his writing conveys the passion that Prince had for his music. I would read a section about a specific set of recordings, close my eyes and listen to them and I could see Prince sitting at the console, alone recording those magnificent screams of desire for "The Beautiful Ones." Or his working again and again on "Strange Relationship" during rehearsal and soundchecks and then setting it aside.Is this a book solely for the most hardcore of Prince fans, absolutely not. This is a book for anyone who loves music, because this is the story of perhaps the two most important years in the life of arguably the most important musician of the 20th century. This book reveals some of the magic behind Prince's creative process. And it verifies that when Prince boasted about how prolific he was, which at times seemed like the bravado he was know for onstage, that he was not exaggerating but simple stating the truth.What is also wonderful about this book is that even with the massive amount of research, interviews, searching periodicals for source material it still allows for the mystery that was Prince. Prince told us in "Old Friends For Sale" that "But life is no fun, life ain't no fun without fantasy" and that fantasy or mystery is very much present.I simple can not recommend this book enough, if you have the hardcover you owe it to yourself to put this on your Christmas wishlist, or if you are like me and can't wait until Christmas, buy it now for yourself. I also bought a second signed copy directly from the author's website and that came with a super cool bookmark.The only bummer is that I want the next volume now, now, now and I know that won't be the case. This author is obviously dedicated to getting the facts correct and then putting those facts to work to create a story, not just an encyclopedia. Add his obvious passion for the music and well it is worth the wait. And we can hope that those who are making decisions about what to release from Prince's vault will read this and future books and let us hear the songs we for now can only read about.

For a fan like me who loves Prince's entire career but is especially fascinated with the Purple Rain era with The Revolution, this book is the holy grail of Prince books. Instead of simply giving us a list of studio sessions as a simple reference book, Duane Tudahl presents a compelling narrative (with quotes from Prince and those who worked closely with him) to give us a month-by-month -- often day-by-day -- account of Prince's work schedule, discussing what was going on in Prince's career and life during these sessions. The author draws upon previous interviews but also conducted many new interviews for this book, and the result gives the reader a unique new perspective never before captured in a book about Prince. There is no gossip or dirt here. The focus is on the music, as it should be. You still get glimpses into Prince's personal life through the eyes and ears of those who worked closest with him, but respectfully so, and only in relation to how it affected his music. In interviews and podcasts promoting the book, Tudahl talked about the years of his life that he spent devotedly and meticulously working on this book, and his devotion is evident in this book. It is clearly a labor of love. It was a huge thrill for me to read about what was going on in the studio and thinking about what was happening in my life at that time, a time was Prince's music consumed me completely. For someone like me who discovered Prince in 1983 and has been obsessed with his music from that time, getting an insight into how this music was conceived and created is a gift that I never dreamed would be possible. During the time period covered in the book, Prince was working on his own music as well as music for The Time, Vanity 6, Appolonia 6, Sheila E., and others. The book covers what is arguably Prince's most prolific time period and documents it in extreme detail while never sounding boring or too scholarly. It's written in simple language that allows you to focus on the story and the songs and not get bogged down in an elaborate writing style or editorializing. The focus is on Prince's music, which is why this book is such a joy to read. Thanks Duane for a fascinating book!

The first edition hardcover is an absolute must read, not only for Prince fans but also for fans of rock / pop / soul music of the 80’s as it gives an astounding account of Prince’s work right before and after Purple Rain.The insight into the individual sessions adds a level of history and substance to not only classic tracks, but also many deep cuts / b-sides and songs given to others.The first edition is not a lightweight book. It’s an enormous volume and so I preordered the expanded version wondering “How can Duane add more to that?!”He did it, and it works. Instead of just an additional chapter, there is quite a lot more information added to the chronology of the original. There are more interviews and more dates and more songs included.For example, after reading the original, I had questions regarding the recording of a specific B-Side . When my copy of the expanded edition arrived, that was one of the first things I looked for and there was more information! Awesome! (note: I didn’t name the title because it may offend more sensitive readers).If you have the original hardcover, and you love it the way I do, you will want to pick up this edition right away. It truly IS expanded and the additional insights make something that I already thought of as perfect even better.Now, if you don’t own the first edition, You don’t need it, but you do need this one. It’s the first edition on steroids. It’s bigger and it’s better.
