Along with Brook Landon's "Building Great Sentences", this book helped to either revolutionize or affirm many of my basic conceptions regarding the English sentence. The essence of William's approach to writing is to explore the characteristics that make prose clear, flowing, logically organized, while retaining an elegance and beauty that is lost on our "keep-it-short, simple, and stupid" culture of writing instruction.Best of all are the summary pages at the ends of the chapters. Williams does not shy away from boiling things down with graphics and concise take-aways; he also uses these pages to keep a "running tally" of all previous lessons, integrating all older advice with newer tips, which makes it easier to process and absorb all the information coming at you. (Think of it as a "summary slide" in a powerpoint that keeps reappearing throughout a presentation and growing every time you cover new tips).Writers at every level will benefit from the concrete, practical, and insightful advice in this book, including:- Begin sentences with familiar information and move toward new information- Let subjects be "characters" and let verbs be actions- Establish meaning early, and use resumptive, summative, and free modifiers to add context and informationHe avoids the tyranny of traditional advice such as "don't use passive voice" and "don't end sentences with prepositions", instead offering wise and insightful looks at when and when not to do such things and, more importantly, why. A must have for writing teachers, students, and anyone who cares about the written word.

.Reviewed by C.J.Singh (Berkeley, CA).Years ago, I attended a weekend workshop for instructors of college composition that was led by Professor Joseph Williams, the author of STYLE, visiting from the University of Chicago and Professor Richard Lanham, author of Revising Prose , visiting from UCLA. They presented lucid and witty summaries of their books, Lanham focusing on revising at the sentence level and Williams on paragraphs. Although their books have gone through several editions since, the core concepts remain the same. Both self-teaching books are on my amazon Listmania's list "Expository Writing: Top Ten Books."While teaching Advanced Editorial Workshop, a ten-week course, at the University of California, I regularly assigned the earlier editions of STYLE as the main textbook. Each term, students rated the book as excellent. (The prerequisite to the workshop was a review course, with the main textbook "The Harbrace College Handbook." Although STYLE includes a 22-page appendix summarizing grammar and punctuation rules, most readers would be well-advised to reread a standard college handbook, such as Diana Hacker and Nancy Sommers's A Writer's Reference with Exercises. See my review on Amazon.)Even a brief browsing of Joseph Williams's STYLE would persuade most readers that it makes the much touted Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style" look, well, elementary. Simplistic. If the seductively slender "Elements" -- easily read in a day, no exercises to do -- could deliver the claim on its jacket, by the end of the day there'd be millions of excellent writers. The 11th edition of STYLE has been ably co-authored by Joseph Bizup. Among the enhancements Bizup presents are reordering of two chapters so that the trajectory is from clarity to grace instead of from sentence- to document-level. He has added many new exercises "grouped under the heading `In Your Own Word,' that invite writers to work with their own prose" (p v)..Part One, Style as Choice, focuses on different kinds of rules - - real, social, invented. Three of the many examples of invented rules presented are the usage distinctions between that/which; fewer/less; and who/whom. An invented rule says: "Use the relative pronoun `that' -- not `which' -- for restrictive clauses" (page 15). Williams traces the history of this invention and quotes several noted writers who disregard it. His discussion is included in Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage (See my review on amazon.)Another invented rule says: "Use fewer with nouns you count, less with nouns you cannot." Again many established writers disregard it. On the who/whom distinction, he favors "Who am writing for?" as used by William Zinsser in his widely read ON WRITING WELL "Purists would insist on "For whom am I writing?" as the invented rule "Use whom as the object of a verb or preposition." An example of a real rule: "Use `who' when it is the subject of verb in its clause; use `whom' only when it is an object in its own clause." Here's an actual rule: use `who' when it is the subject of a verb in its own clause; use `whom' when it is an object in its own clause (p 18).Each part concludes with a fairly detailed summary. For example, the Part One summary begins: "We must write correctly, but if in defining correctness we ignore the difference between fact and folklore, we risk overlooking what is really important - - the choices that make our writing dense and wordy or clear and concise" (p 25).Part Two, Clarity, comprises chapters entitled Actions; Characters; Cohesion and Coherence; Emphasis. Summary opens: "A simple English sentence is more than the sum of its words; it is a system of systems. Readers have consistent preferences that you should try to meet: They want sentences to get to the subject of a main clause quickly... and they want sentences that get past the subject to a verb quickly" (p 94).Part Three, Clarity of Form, includes chapters on Motivation and Global Coherence. The summary opens: "Plan your paragraphs, sections, and the whole on this model: Open each unit with a relatively short segment introducing it. End that segment with a sentence stating the point of that unit. Toward the end of that point sentence, use key themes that the rest of the unit develops" (p 124).Part Four, Grace, comprises chapters on Concision; Shape; and Elegance. The chapter on Shape introduces resumptive, summative, and free modifiers. Clear examples explain these terms.."Since mature writers often use resumptive modifiers to extend a line of thought, we need a word to name what I am about to do in this sentence, a sentence that I could have ended at that comma but have extended to show you to a relative clause attached to a noun" ( p153)."To create a summative modifier, end a grammatically complete segment of a sentence with a comma, add a term that sums up the substance of the sentence so far, and continue with a restrictive relative clause beginning with that: `Economic changes have reduced Russian population growth to less than zero, a demographic event that will have serious social implications' (p 154).And, free modifiers: "Like the other modifiers, a free modifier can appear at the end of a clause, but instead of repeating a key word or summing up what went before, it comments on the subject of the closest verb. Free modifiers resemble resumptive and summative modifiers, letting you (i.e., the free modifier lets you) extend the line of a sentence while avoiding a train of ungainly phrases and clauses'" (p 155). In the preceding sentence, Williams simultaneously explains and exemplifies the concept of free modifiers.Part Five, The Ethics of Style, takes on academics who "rationalize opacity," with a "claim that their prose style must be difficult because their ideas are new, they are, as a matter of simple fact, more often wrong than right. The philosopher of language Ludwig Wittgenstein said: `Whatever can be thought clearly can be thought clearly; whatever can be written can be written clearly.' I'd add a nuance: and with just a bit more effort , more clearly still" usually be written more clearly, with just a little more effort" (p 195)..Well-crafted writing emerges only from repeated rewriting. This five-star text- and workbook teaches the exacting--and joyously rewarding--craft of rewriting. Moreover, I wholly agree with the author's observation on writing clearly and cognitive psychology: "The more clearly we write, the more clearly we see and feel and think."In the 11th edition, co-author Joseph Bizup presents effective enhancements and wisely retains the features that made STYLE a contemporary classic on substantive editing of nonfiction prose.

I had to purchase this book for an advanced writing class in law school - but this is probably the best purchase I've made in my entire life. It is completely changing the way I write - for the better. My writing has improved in terms or organization, sentence construction, and readability. The author's style is very clear and easy to get through. While it's possible to read through the entire text in a day, I recommend taking it chapter by chapter and allowing yourself a few days to process each new technique that he offers. I also recommend working through the practice problems in the book. They are not there as "busy work", they are there because they highlight critical ideas and techniques the reader should be able to employ. In University or in graduate school, this will help your writing style tremendously and set you apart from your peers. Even if you are no longer in school, if your work requires you to write clearly and intelligibly, this is a must-read. The most important thing about this book is that it transcends all different styles and areas of writing: whether you are writing a gossip column, an advanced scientific report, a legal article or a work of science fiction, the techniques, tips, and tricks in this book are paramount to becoming a great writer. If you are on the fence about purchasing this book, consider this: of all the textbooks I've ever had to purchase for class, and in fact of all the books I've ever had to purchase in my life ever, I consider this book to have given me the greatest value for what I paid.

Wow, I bought a used copy, and I was so impressed. The chapter on writing an introduction was worth the purchase price, even if I never read the rest of the book. I've written and edited my whole life from being the editor of my school newspaper to being a founding editor for a professional journal to writing a book for a major publishing house, and believe me, I still have something to learn from this Williams' book on writing. If you want to write with clarity, grace, and style, Williams will show you how.

Beginner's Guide to Creating Manga Art is a more of a tips and techniques book rather than a structured course on drawing manga from start to end. The book covers only characters. It starts with lessons on features, expressions, anatomy, poses, clothing and character designs. The lessons are brief and are covered under 30 pages. For example, for drawing of heads, the front and sides are taught. But for heads at other angles, while there are illustrated examples with guidelines, there aren't enough in depth explanation to go with it. This section is just an introduction on figure drawing. The second part of the book features tutorials from various artists on designing characters. There are many useful tips on drawing, what type of materials to use and things to look out for. Many artists are using traditional medium but there are a few tutorials on Photoshop. The third part is on colouring the characters that were drawn in the previous chapter. The tutorials cover a variety of tools that are used, such as coloured pencils, markers, watercolour and Photoshop. Again, there are good tips on handling the specific mediums. The last few pages feature a manga art gallery from various artists.Overall, this book is more on understanding the style of manga art, and the tutorials that show you how to create them. For beginners, I would also recommend getting dedicated books such as Drawing the Head and Hands and Figure Drawing for All It's Worth. With basic figure drawing skills, stylizing characters for manga will be much easier.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Ok, I really thought this was the book that was going to demistify manga style for me. I've been drawing humans realistically and in Western styles for years. Maybe its because I'm so used to realistic proportions, but I just cant seem to be able to create a charming manga style without directly copying the styles of manga artists. My proportions, and the overall look is just screaming "Western". So, I thought, based on existing reviews, that this book would be perfect for me. They say it's more descriptive of the style as a whole than a true beginners guide. They say its better for artists who are above beginner level. To be honest, I'm not sure who its for. My guess would be for people who don't know what manga even is, just to explain it to them. Otherwise, it's practically useless. It has very brief descriptions of manga genres, and it doesn't go into detail on any of them or their styles. That's no help to an artist like me looking to learn how to create a manga style. They don't even visually represent each genre's major styles. It has very rudimental and mediocre guides on facial proportion and manga style anatomy. the artist who created those guides does not seem comfortable with the human form. It's one thing to complain that a manga style lacks realism(of course many manga styles really lack realism), but these guides ...they didn't even look professionally drawn. They looked uncomfortable. I actually cringed a little at some of the illustrations. I don't know how to draw manga, and I can draw better manga than those guides. This part of the book should have been illustrated by the most experienced, most comfortable, and most masterful artist on their project-- not the worst one. Imagine if I actually was a beginner? How am I going to learn if my foundation is based on bad anatomy drawings? That would slow me down for sure. After that disappointment, the rest of the book just lets you peek on different artists creating a single piece of work in their individual style. Cool. This isn't bad at all. Except that there's really not much left of the book at this point. It's surprisingly thin.Honestly, If you're actually a beginner, you might be better off buying one of Chris Hart's updated books. Even if his illustrations have not been top grade in the past, he more than makes up for it with easy to digest text, coupled with helpful diagrams, and tutorials. If you're not a beginner and you already have your foundations, just dive directly into the world of manga. You will learn more by studying real artists than with this book.

Worth every penny! It's hard to find detailed books like this and the art is beautiful! The drawing and coloring tutorials lead the reader step-by-step through each process and tells them what should be focused on most, as well as the importance of details. There are different coloring techniques as well. This book it perfect for everyone, whether you prefer to draw on your computer or sketch on paper. It's great for beginners!

The product itself is nice, but might as well buy it used because I'm highly disappointed how mangled and used up my so called "new" product came in. Had to wipe a brown dirt smear off the book which I have no idea how it got under the protective shell. And the shell has huge cuts and scrapes. My camera is so bright that it doesn't show all of the scratches but the case is almost cloudy from scratches. This is supposed to be a gift and I am worried I might have to find something else and return this bc of its condition. As for the book itself, I had already seen it in person so I knew the content was good. It has a very nice variety of art styles and a mix of traditional and digital coloring techniques. It could almost pass for an art book bc of the beautiful array of works. Each work comes with a detailed yet clear description and breakdown of what tools the artist used and their coloring process from start to finish which is super helpful. If only it was actually new!

I highlighted and bookmarked a number of helpful things in this book, but it didn’t quite match my expectations, and I would estimate that only around half of the book was helpful for me. The problem here (and perhaps I just overlooked it in the description) is that this book is actually about interviewing users in their particular physical context. It’s all about making observations based on how someone interacts with their environment or a product, and while that’s interesting, it didn’t match my expectations or needs. The guidance related to question format, remaining silent, the roles of secondary and tertiary interviewers, and other more generic instruction was great, but a LOT of this book is about how to conduct yourself and make good observations in-person.

Learning to ask questions, and learning to really listen to people and hear what’s important to them is such a crucial skill for designers, researchers, and product managers today. Yes, it’s especially important for design research, but also in other scenarios—talking to stakeholders, discussions with clients, arguments with one’s significant other, you name it.Learning how to listen—and to truly hear the intent behind what is said—is a critical skill that the best designers excel at. This is not a gift you either have or you don’t, it’s a competency you can develop with the very thorough guidance in this book. It covers the mechanics of a good interview, how to get the information you need without biasing the whole thing, and all the soft skills necessary to execute research. This combo of hard and soft skills gives newbies the confidence in their skills to actually go out and TALK to people, instead of sandbagging and avoiding the whole thing. I’ve recommended it to all my students, and recommend this book to anyone looking to ask better questions and have more informative conversations.

I'm an extrovert, so I thought that interviews would be a piece of cake.In fact, interviews are one of my weaknesses: I talk too much and listen too little. This book helped me remember that the interview is not about the conversation, it's about understanding the people who will use the products I design and the problems they encounter with it.Also—and how many tech industry leaders can make this claim—Steve Portigal is followed by an Emergency Plum.

The definitive book for aspiring UX researchers. Approachable, with depth and understanding. Few writers share their process as efficiently, directly and memorably as what I found in this book. If more writers on process and technique could write like this readers would get far more value. Steve understands his craft so expertly, he is able share it with eloquence. Get it on Kindle.

A stand-out book. The book certainly offers expert advise on how to think about, prepare and conduct interviews that will lead to most useful insights. But what makes this book unique is Steve's gift to discuss the exceptions while outlining the norms. Not everyone confronts such outliers let alone resolves it. For example, he talks about how to not offend by refusing hospitality in a customer's premise. He expands beautifully that while it is a professional pursuit for the researcher it feels like a social call for the customer. It is important to empathize with that for the customer to feel at ease. Certainly makes you wiser whatever be your expertise in user research. A worthy read and re-read!

Steve Portigal does an incredible job of balancing the specific and general to create one of the most useful books I have ever read. The real-world “war stories” help clarify the points made in the book, while the insights drawn from those stories are applicable to anyone doing this type of work.A lot of things I’ve read will point to the importance of research and even give an overview of certain techniques, but they don’t go in-depth on how to really do it. I’ll often finish a book and be excited by the concepts, but leave without anything concrete that I can apply directly to my work. This book is the first I’ve found with a comprehensive approach that covers every detail of conducting an interview. I was able to take what I’d learned and use it in my next trip out into the field. Even though many of the concepts have started to become habit now, referring to my notes is now a standard part of my prep work for each new trip. It keeps everything fresh and also reminds me to try new things.I can understand other reviewers’ desires for more detail on synthesizing the research data and making it valuable/valued within the organization. This is definitely the area where I need the most help at this point. However, I found the included information on this topic to be a helpful start, and I agree that this can (and should) be a book all on its own. I also appreciate the laser focus that Interviewing Users has on, well, interviewing users. Steve Portigal sticks to the point and is delightfully thorough without coming close to being long-winded.I’ve encouraged everyone on my team to read this book. If you are trying to become more effective in doing field research, I highly recommend that you also read this book (and more than once). Even if you’ve been conducting interviews for a while, you’ll find a lot of value here.

The text provides a solid overview and coaching on performing interviews for research. The author is light on specific methods or approaches, but a library of tactics and principles is provided, encouraging the reader to experiment and practice. While not a systematic study, the positive tone is welcoming for a beginner and correctly identifies early pitfalls and how to overcome them.

About the Author

PopOut is the unique, genuinely pocket-sized map which features our patented PopOut fold. It is this innovative design that allows our precise, easy to follow cartography to be right in your hand when you need it most. Moreover, the origami fold means you can do away with that awkward, oversized map, making it a compact and discreet reference tool that doesn't shout ‘tourist alert'! PopOut was founded in 1993. Having spotted a need to cure what he calls 'Map Stress Syndrome' after watching numerous tourists around the City of Bath, England, battling with oversized maps, founder Derek Dacey recalled the invaluable miniature charts he used during his days as a commercial pilot. Aiming to bring this level of usability to the city map market, a small team of designers was recruited to realise what would soon become the PopOut. 1993 saw the release of the first ever PopOut Map Bath, which was sold in the gift and souvenir trade across the city. Hot on the heels of this initial success, a research trip to the USA culminated in a redesigned layout, combining strong photo images, high quality printing and laminated covers – standards which are still adhered to today. That research trip also saw the birth of the first US destinations covered in the PopOut range – Boston, NYC, Philadelphia and Washington DC. Launched in the new style in the US they enjoyed instant success in the gift and souvenir trade. Today, PopOut produces over 100 titles for major destinations and is loved by travellers the world over. www.popoutproducts.com

I found that every hotel that I stayed at during this trip had a local map that provided more detailed streets and was easier to fold a piece of paper than figure out how to refill this pop out map. Also, this map took a month to receive which is unacceptable. It didn't come directly from Amazon.

Discovered these little pop out maps by accident. They are delightful! Lots of information packed into a handy, small size. Thank you.

Really convenient for travel. Bought it for a trip, and fits into pockets and purse without taking up too much room.
